Mumbai, Jun 20: A citizen of the metro, Sanghamitra Suryavamshi, surrendered himself at Charkop police station here, after killing his wife with a sharp weapon on Saturday June 18. The police said that Suryavamshi is a drunkard.
Preeti, who worked for a beauty parlour in Churchgate area, was the main contributor to the family’s income, as her husband did not have a regular job or business, it is gathered. Theirs was a love marriage, and the couple quarreled frequently even on petty issues. Suryavamshi, who perhaps was jealous at his wife for gaining prominence over him because of her financial status, started suspecting her character, as she came home late regularly.
Suryavamshi (50) had a nagging suspicion that his wife, Preeti (40), was having an affair with another man. He is a resident of Jeevan Jyot Cooperative Housing Society in Charkop within the city limits. As per his own confession, Suryavamshi killed his wife with a sharp object on Saturday morning. Before that, he had left his twin-kids, Yash and Kush (14) at the home of a relative in Malad in the city, in tune with the pre-conceived plan.
Assistant commissioner of police (ACP), Jayaprakash Jadhav, confirmed that Preeti had complained to the policemen of Charkop police station on Friday night, after her husband fought with her as usual in a drunken state. The policemen had detained Suryavamshi for two hours, before releasing him on his assurance that he was returning to his native place in Gujarat. Suryavamshi reached home, and was packing his belongings to leave for Gujarat, when his wife tried to dissuade him. This gave rise to flare up of emotions and another fight, culminating in the murder of Preeti. Before killing his wife, Suryavamshi dropped off the kids at a realtive’s home. He then reached Charkop police station and surrendered.
In his statement to the police, Suryavamshi reiterated that his wife had an extra-marital affair. He also stated that the relationship between spouses and with the children had been vitiated on account of her illicit relationship, the ACP added.
