Lucknow, Jun 21: Dogged by criticism over the series of rapes that have tarnished UP's image, chief minister Mayawati went on the defensive asserting that her party has been able to maintain law and order in the state.
The state has come under a shadow of shame after seven rapes were reported in the past three days.
Though she maintained her stand, she also pointed out that some changes were required in law to combat the menace, and suggested setting up of fast track courts to speed up the judicial system.
She also assured that the victims and their families will get justice and that the criminals will not be spared. A meeting of top police officers has been called on June 27 to discuss the issue, she said.
Mayawati also criticised the opposition for politicising the issue.
