Mangalore: Air Cargo Complex Proposal Gets Authority’s Nod

Mangalore, Jun 25: On Friday June 24, the Airports Authority of India agreed in-principle for the establishment of an air cargo complex at the local airport. In all likelihood, the complex will become operational in three to four months time from now.

A team comprising authority’s senior officials, who were on a visit to the airport to inspect the facilities available and collect detailed information, completed their task on Friday. The delegation also participated in a meeting of businessman and exporters from Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts in the evening. At this meeting, in which about 300 businessmen participated, the officials confirmed that the authority has agreed in principle, to set up an air cargo complex here.

Airports Authority of India itself will discharge the responsibility of the custodian to handle cargo. The business circles from the coast have promised about five tonnes per day with around 200 tonnes of cargo per month from here. Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry president, G G Mohandas Prabhu, revealed that the authority, in giving its green signal to the project, relied on these promises.

It has been decided to house the complex in the old terminal of the airport, which remains unused as of now. For the purpose, some alterations and changes will be required to be affected to the structure. The architect of the authority will prepare a plan of the complex and send the same for approval of the customs department, and all procedures connected with the complex are expected to be completed in three to four months from now, Prabhu added.
