Mumbai, Jun 27: According to a senior Mumbai police officer, the much talked about murder case of tabloid journalist J Dey has been cracked and suspects will be produced before the court.

The officer said that a total of seven suspects have been arrested from Karnataka and Maharashtra, but he refused to divulge details of the arrested, saying they will be submitted in the court.

The senior Mid-Day journalist was a popular crime reporter, who extensively covered the underworld. It is said that he had many informers among the police as well as the underworld. The postmortem report had revealed that he was shot at a close range.

Maharashtra chief minister Prithviraj Chavan had earlier ruled out handing over the investigations into Dey's murder to CBI, saying that the Mumbai police would crack the case soon.

"If the High Court orders the government to do it, the case would be given to the CBI to honour the court verdict. But, Mumbai police would put forth its case before the court properly," Chavan had said.
