Renowned Director Mani Kaul Passes Away

New Delhi, Jul 6: Mani Kaul (66) who had carved a niche in New Indian Cinema, passed away following a prolonged illness at his residence, here on  Wednesday June 6.

He began his career with ‘Uski Roti’ in 1969 which fetched him the Filmfare Critics Award for best movie and his other movies like ‘Ashad Ka ek Din’, ‘Duvidha’ and "Idiot" also bagged awards. A graduate from the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Mani won the National Film Award for Best documentary film ‘Siddheshwari’ in 1989.

He was born in Jodhpur, Rajasthan and his uncle was well-known actor-director Mahesh Kaul. Mani who is survived by two sons and as many daughters, was just discharged from the hospital last night, said his family members.

His death has been deeply mourned by film scholars and directors from Kolkata.
