Worried about SPOs' security: Raman Singh

Kolkata, July 10 (IANS) Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh said Sunday his government is worried about the security of the special police officers (SPOs) in the wake of the Supreme Court ordering they be disarmed and added that they will be kept in camps for the time being.

"We have to take back the arms from them (SPOs). We are worried about their security. For the time being they will be kept in camps," Raman Singh said on the sidelines of a programme here.

The Supreme Court Tuesday slammed the Chhattisgarh government for using tribals as SPOs in anti-Maoist operations. The court held that the appointment of SPOs to perform any of the duties of regular police officials was unconstitutional.

The chief minister also said that rights activist Binayak Sen should not be included in the Planning Commission.

"People like him should not have been included in the highest decision making bodies like planning commission," he said.

"Judgments were passed against the activities of Sen in each and every court of Chhattisgarh. But he got bail from the Supreme Court. Our objection is that if a person has just got bail and has not been acquitted of charges of the anti-national activities then how can he be included in planning commission," Raman Singh asked.

He took a dig at the civil society by saying that they were not seen when children and police were killed by the Maoists.

"We don't see people holding placards and shouting slogans when children and common people are killed by the Maoists but when we take action against violence there are many who shout slogans and go back to their five star hotels," said the Chhattisgarh chief minister.

"The Indian police force is not mentally and physically fit to combat the guerrilla warfare launched by the Maoists. We need to train them in the way as it was done in Andhra Pradesh and is being done Chhattisgarh," said Singh.
