Mangaluru/Udupi: Rainfall brings respite from heat, destruction in twin districts

Udupi/Mangaluru, May 14: Many parts of the twin coastal districts experienced showers accompanied by high velocity winds causing damage on Saturday.

High velocity winds accompanied by rain lashed Mangaluru city for two hours on Saturday, May 13, in the morning. Later, the weather conditions turned cloudy followed by a spell of moderate rainfall.

Beltangady and Bantwal taluks also experienced good rainfall. In Beltangady the cement sheet roof of Gopalakrishna Bhat's house got blown off near Kokkada Jodumarga on Dharmasthala-Subramanya highway. The loss of property is estimated to be Rs 1.5 lac. The elderly couple expect local administration to provide some financial relief. However, none of the panchayat or taluk revenue officers have so far visited Bhat's home so far.

A huge tree fell on the compound wall of the Maddadka horticultural department office causing damage. Many electricity poles were also uprooted in Beltangady taluk due to heavy rains.

In Karkala, it has been raining since the last two days in the evening and in the night. Electricity, telephone and Internet services were disrupted due to the rains.

According to the Indian Metereological department, a yellow alert has been announced on May 14 for the coastal region of Karnataka. Rains with high velocity winds are expected to lash the twin districts. The sea waves are also likely to be violent.

On Saturday, Mangaluru city recorded a maximum temperature of 30.8 deg C and a minimum temperature of 24.8 deg C.
