Kolkata, July 17 (IANS) Conceding that certain misconceptions existed in the party, Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) general secretary Prakash Karat Sunday said suitable measures would be taken to adapt to the changed scenario.

"The aim of the meeting was to explore ways to change the party functioning as per the prevalent situation. The way ahead is to rectify whatever misconceptions are there. We need to work hard to reclaim the trust of the people of West Bengal," Karat said after the conclusion of a two-day state committee meeting here.

He criticised the Congress and its partner Trinamool Congress for skyrocketing prices and corruption and accused them of formulating anti-people policies.

"The party needs to strengthen the organisational structure and party cadres need to be pro-active. The present situation of the state is not permanent. We need to communicate with the masses at a larger scale," said CPI-M state secretary Biman Bose.

Analysing the causes of its defeat in the April-May assembly elections in West Bengal, the party, in a statement, said organisational failure was one of chief reasons of the debacle.

A lack of responsibility towards the poor and drifting away from communist principles also played a major part, it added.

"The Left Front government's image among the poor had suffered to a certain extent. The government's deficiencies to bring in development had caused discontent among the masses," the statement added.

The CPI-M said will stage demonstrations in New Delhi and Kolkata in August to protest alleged state-wide violence in West Bengal.

From July 24 the party will also start a continuous campaign against "corruption by the central government".
