Mangaluru: Biparjoy cyclone effect – No supply of fresh fish in coastal districts

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Jun 16: Mechanised boats are not allowed to undertake deep sea fishing effective June 1 up to July 31 as it is breeding time for fishes.

During this period, the fishing is undertaken by country boats. However, this year due to the arrival of Biperjoy cyclone the traditional boats also did not venture into the sea causing severe shortage of fish in the coastal districts.

Nearly 5,400 country boats in the undivided district of Dakshina Kannada have been anchored on the port itself due to the Biparjoy cyclone. In addition, the district administration has also declared a high wave alert.

Right now, the sea shore cities of Mangaluru and Udupi are facing shortage of fresh sea fish. Only the frozen fish are available in the market. Fish sellers are also having a tough time as people do not prefer to buy and eat frozen fish as it is low in quality and taste compared to the fresh fish.

Now with the Biparjoy making landfall at Gujarat on Thursday night, the traditional fishermen are expecting the waves to calm down in the sea so that they can venture into the sea for fishing again.
