New Delhi, Jul 25: Suresh Kalmadi, who has been detained in Tihar jail for over two months in connection with the Commonwealth Games scam, is reportedly suspected to be suffering from dementia. If diagnosed, then this particular condition may have a bearing on his trial.
Kalmadi underwent an MRI (Magnetic resonance imaging) scan at the Lok Narayan Jai Prakash Hospital where he was recently taken for tests.
Deputy inspector general R N Sharma said that in the medical records history of Kalmadi submitted to the jail authorities by his family showed dementia at a preliminary stage. Dimentia is a disease related to memory loss, impaired reasoning and personality changes. The formal copy of the test conducted at the hospital is still awaited, he said.
Kalmadi's lawyer Hitesh Jain said his client had been suffering from this problem for the past four to five years and this had been communicated to the jail and investigating authorities.
"As per the law, a demented person suffers from a global memory loss. If there is a memory loss at the time of the commissioning of the offence, it is not possible to have a fraudulent intention," lawyer K T S Tulsi contended.
Tulsi also said that once it is known when the disease had affected Kalmadi, only then will they be able to decide if it can have a bearing on the case or not.
