Parole denied to Lyle Menendez after Erik also ordered to stay in prison

Los Angeles, Aug 23: A US judicial commission on Friday denied parole to Joseph Lyle Menendez, a day after his brother Erik was similarly ordered to remain in prison for the 1989 murders of their parents in a Beverly Hills mansion.

The 57-year-old, known as Lyle, will remain behind bars alongside his younger brother, despite campaigns for their release by family, friends, and celebrities including Kim Kardashian. The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) confirmed, “Joseph (Lyle) Menendez was denied parole for three years at his initial suitability hearing today.”

Friday’s hearing came more than 36 years after Jose and Kitty Menendez were fatally shot by their sons. Prosecutors had described the killings as a calculated attempt to secure a large inheritance. The brothers initially blamed a mafia hit but later claimed self-defense after alleging years of emotional and sexual abuse.

The closed-door hearing lasted 11 hours, with both brothers appearing via video link from San Diego prison. Panel members, whose identities were not disclosed, questioned them about their behavior and attitudes toward the murders.

The parole hearings followed a resentencing earlier this year, which reduced the brothers’ original life sentences to 50 years with the possibility of release. Lyle’s denial marks the latest setback for a movement that gained renewed attention after Netflix’s hit series Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story and other documentaries chronicling the infamous case.
