Hubballi forest officer forgets to wash hands after spraying insecticide, eats food, dies

Hubballi, Jul 8 (IANS): Forgetting to wash his hands after spraying insecticide and consuming food has cost a forest officer his life in Hubballi, Karnataka, according to sources.

The deceased is identified as forest officer Yogesh Nayak, a resident of Bada village in Kumta taluk.

According to police sources, Nayak, working in the forest department in Virnoli division, had sprayed pesticide to clear weeds and insects in the Teak farm on June 27. After this, he forgot to wash his hands and ate lunch. After returning home, the officer complained of stomach irritation the next day.

He consulted a private doctor who prescribed antibiotics. However, when the symptoms did not subside, Nayak drove to Hubballi and got admitted to a hospital.

The sources claimed that during checkup, it was found that his vital body organs such as kidney, liver and lungs were damaged. He was later shifted to another hospital but by that time Nayak had slipped into coma. The family had got him shifted to the KIMS hospital in Hubballi for the treatment. However, the officer succumbed to the infection on July 7. The officer is survived by wife and one child.

The police have taken up the investigation and stated that they are awaiting the post-mortem report to ascertain the exact cause of death.

Why is the pesticide not named? There should be ban on using such dangerous pesticides and there should be very strict regulation is wear hand gloves while spraying any pesticide. What a waste of a valuable life!

If one reads the insert in pesticides and herbicides which are in fine print which requires magnifying glass to read, then nobody will use them. One requires special masks that filter chemicals and hand gloves are compulsory. Spraying with the wind and not against the wind is also advised. Our farmers don't practice these precautions and most of them come down with rare diseases and allergies. I've noticed many are getting cancers too. Herbicides and pesticides are known to kill biodiversity and bacteria that are in the soil which help the plants withstand pests and provide nutrients to the plants and their produce which are healthier for the consumers. They pollute the environment and run-off gets into streams and water bodies destroying us and our health too. It's time we say goodbye to Bayer and Bill Gates who are destroying the whole planet with genetically modified food products which destroy our gut bacteria which keep us healthy.

Such a light dose of pesticide will do nothing. And nobody will soak his hand with pesticide when he is mixing and filling spraying machine. Only slight leak might touch his hand and that also evaporated, and he might have rubbed his hand on pants since he might not get water to wash just like all we people do. Also, so how fast doctors determine that his Kidney, liver and Lungs damaged. It takes week to determine this. Also, the quantity on his hand is more than his hands should smell badly and he would not eat food. Dal bahut kala Hai. He is murdered.

Use of herbicides should be banned at any cost because this is harmful for the living organisms in the soil as well as the one who sprays

Imagine that same strong insecticide and pesticide is sprayed on all your vegetables and fruits. Some hoteliers and some home owners too barely wash their vegetables before cooking.

Rudolf R.Mumbai.this effect of spray one should only feel how strong it is when spraying. You first of all inhale it sufficiently .That itself is enough to kill you half. The fact that doctor immediately wrote antibiotic without any further diagnose is very disturbing. So no wonder people are accustomed to antibiotic, later when really needs ,it doesnt work .I myself know this inhaling spray when they were spraying on flower (Jasmin)plants.so strong ,that one cant stay there ,or breath.I wonder people how they do that on red spinat or other vegetables and later sell it.How can a officer forget to wash hands after spray?IS so smelling whole body ,his clothes .Noone detected it?Naturally kidneys and through stomach it is fast absorbed in body than one wants.sad ,one should be careful to eat what is bought from market. When no other choice is left. Please wash it thouroughly atleast three times Heartfelt sympathy to his family .

Rita, you are right; rapid absorption can take place via inhalation and even through the skin if proper precautions are not taken! BTW, I wonder how some doctor can randomly prescribe antibiotics without taking a clear history of the patient? The consumption of antibiotics worsened his health condition ultimately leading to multiple organ failure!

beggars have no choices...similarly when we live in a third world country...these are the things we have to accept and live...years back when Amir khan was holding Satyameva Jayate on TV...one farmer of rajastan openly said that he grows organic vegetables for his family use on one acre of land...while rest 20 acres he grows for market sale and sprays pesticides generously...this is the reallity of our country..our own people are killing us....

The bitter truth is the vegetables or fruits grown completely organic doesn't look that beautiful or pleasing to the eyes as compared to the ones grown using chemical fertilizers by large farms, so eventually the crop gets rejected by supermarkets or even the buyers calling them as second class or bargaining for a lower price Ultimately farmers are forced to use chemicals as fertilizers as well as insecticides to compensate for the losses Now there's a new thing called hydroponics where chemical fertilizers are directly fed through roots and leaves in liquid form which is trending in big farms

Many farmers also inject hormones and colours to increase the size and flesh colour of the fruits/vegetables! In Mumbai green leafy vegetables are grown along suburban railway lines using gutter and sewage water!

RIP!! Difficult to believe that he could not smell or get the taste of pesticide while having food because pesticides have strong odor and taste; secondly, the doctor giving him antibiotics added to the lethal effect of the pesticide!!
