Udupi: Service road collapses in Santhekatte underpass construction area

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (TP)

Udupi, Jul 10: A service road collapsed in Santhekatte underpass construction area in the morning here on Monday July 10. The underpass retaining wall also collapsed partially.

Residents and retail shop owners have expressed fear over the collapsing of the entire service road and national highway.

When locals tried to contact the engineer, he was not available at the site.

As many as 350 houses are in the area. The residents are urging for the construction of a new road for them to travel as the road they depended on has collapsed.

Many enraged locals said that if the concerned authorities do not stop the construction of the underpass, they will block the road and hold protests.

Apart from all issues mentioned -- corruption -- main reason -- etc etc -- it is also found Civil engineering stream has few takers - So colleges are closing CIVIL DEPT itself --- all want to go into IT -- SOFTWARE etc -- other Engg streams -- There is sadly no Pride in CIVIL ENGG -- despite SIR MV being from our STATE -- builder of OLD MYSORE /KARNATAKA -- But Civil engineering is a very important field affecting all our day to day lives -- Be it on Roads - -Offices -- Buildings -- Houses -- Infrastructure -- in all -- Good salary need to be given for this crucial branch of engineering -- incl some Good advertising -- importance of CIVIL ENGG -- etc -- Most countries have good roads and basic infrastructure all neatly done -- well designed -- built to last ---

I had been to santhekatte my native place where I was brought up last month I could hear the blasting sound every morning. Somebody said they are breaking the rocks using explosives. This is the main reason for collapsing and it will damage the houses also gradually. They should bring an engineer geographical who can identify the rocks underneath.if that is the case they could have gone for overbridge. Good engineers are going abroad.government should keep them here by paying good salary for countries development

"Paisa bolta hai"! Even the fully loaded heavy vehicles create subtle vibrations, which ultimately leads to loosening of the soil below; all this has be considered when designing the road; here it looks like the soil testing was not done and a thick buiscuit like layer of bitumen was laid; even the retainer wall looks weak!

The reason traffic at Santhekatte junction is become so bad is precisely because of this unregulated rise of buildings and commercial establishments on either side of the highway. Eversince the 4 lane highway came up, so many building have come up on either side all the way upto Udupi, Katpadi. All the buildings and commercial enterprises all have direct entry and exit to the highway. The whole highway now looks like Udupi's main commerical street. The same situation in Padubidri, Surathkal, Mulki, Baikampady etc. I also hear that in the original plan, the highway had plans for bypassing the whole of Santhekatte and Brahmavar but was later dropped because of opposition from the local businesses. Now it has led to this messy situation and everybody is crying foul.

Every road should carry contractor 's name -- along with other details -- engineer or officer who approved -- total cost ---Year ---- it should not be named after any politician etc -- etc -- Thereby public can know who was the contractor -- -(- If good work -- credit can be given and more work -- more contracts ---- If shoddy -- work - poor quality --- all will know and to be named and shamed -- money to be recovered -- no new contracts ) --

They have already floated a tender and given contract to a company to build a underpass with a at grade overpass at nanthoor. And you can very well imagine what will happen there considering there is absolutely no way for rain water to flow from nanthoor which is a hilltop. And this underpass will be approx one km. long. I have seen the drawings and have objected but the NHAI authorities are just ignoring my protests because they say there is tremendous pressure from non locals to build something here. Basically people want patchwork short term solutions and not long term solutions such as a bypass outside the city.

That is the million dollar question; this location does not first lend itself to underpass systems. But, frankly, we don't understand why the Authority and the ruling MP advocated for underpasses rather than flyovers.
