New Delhi, Jul 27 (IANS): The much-awaited land acquisition bill, which seeks to overhaul the colonial era law and ensure adequate compensation to farmers, is unlikely to be passed in the monsoon session of Parliament, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said Wednesday.
"It may not be passed in this session," Mukherjee said while talking to a select group of media persons at his North Block office here.
The finance minister said the government was working on the bill but because of the legislative process involved, it would not be possible to pass the bill in the monsoon session that begins Aug 1.
The new law would replace the Land Acquisition Act, 1894. There have been huge protests across the country against the misuse of this law.
Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh said Wednesday the government has finalised the new bill and would place it for public consultation soon.
