Bantwal, Jul 26: Pudu gram panchayat byelection results were announced and Congress candidate Mohammed Iqbal emerged victorious in the election.
The by-election was held as Hussain M, a member, had died. Three candidates had contested the elections. Mohammed Iqbal, son of Hussain had contested on a Congress ticket.
SDPI supported candidate Abdul Lathif polled 39 votes. BJP candidate Mohammed Ashraf got 140 votes while Congress candidate Mohammed Iqbal won by getting 385 votes. Eight votes among them were rejected. As many as 572 votes were cast in all.
Taluk panchayat executive Rajanna was the election officer. Pudu gram panchayat development officer Harish K A was the assistant election officer. Pudu gram panchayat development officer Harish K A was the counting supervisor. Deputy tahsildar Navin Benjanapadav was the counting assistant. Seetarama J Janardhan, revenue inspector, Kala, Sunder, Kiran and Chandu conducted the elections.
Congress workers celebrated the victory of the party candidate at Farangipete.
Former member of zilla panchayat Ummar Farook said that the voters had supported Congress party as they liked the development work undertaken by current Vidhana Sabha Speaker and MLA U T Khader. Former president of the panchayat Ramlan Maripalla said that BJP and SDPI are likely to lose their deposits.
Winning candidate Mohamed Iqbal thanked the party workers and voters of the constituency.
Panchayat president Rashida Banu, vice-president Iqbal Sajeeru, member Rehana, block Congress president Dilshan Perimar, district youth Congress secretary Taushif Valachil, Mudipu block youth Congress vice-president Majeed Perimar, Hakim Maripalla, Karim Maripalla, Fayaz Maripalla, Irshad Padi, Ibrahim Maripalla, Fani Maripalla, I S Imran and Salim Malli were present.
