Bantwal, Jul 31: With the slogan, ‘Go Green.. Protect and Preserve the Environment’, the Catholic Sabha, ICYM and Environment Commission of St Thomas the Apostle Church, Nirkan, Vogga jointly celebrated the environment day named as ‘Laudato Si’ in the church campus by planting and distributing medicinal and commercial (timber) saplings on July 30.
Fr Leo William Lobo, parish priest of Nirkan church, inaugurating the event said, “Selfishness of man has made our human life miserable as the breath of life is marred by cutting down the trees and destroying the forests which is extremely essential for our survival." He urged the parishioners to grow more trees in their home premises by offering them the saplings. The saplings were distributed to every member of the parish.
Austin Lobo and Alphonse Fernandes helped to distribute the saplings of sandalwood, mahogany, raktha chandana, amrith noni, neem, gooseberry and of few other plants.
Alphonse Fernandes compered the programme. Austin Lobo welcomed the gathering and Jossy Pinto conveyed vote of thanks to all those who were the cause of making Nirkan parish, ‘Go Green’.
