Bengaluru: Excessive pricing of liquor by bar owners, boozers approach excise department

Daijiworld Media Network – Bengaluru (MS)

Bengaluru, Aug 6: Liquor consumers have condemned the steep increase in the price of liquor and have approached the excise department to look into the matter.

The excise department which has taken the appeal of consumers seriously, has warned the bars that take more money from consumers.

Accusations are heard that certain bar owners are taking more money than stipulated by the government saying that government has increased the prices.

Boozers have accused that bar owners are taking at least 40 to 45% more price though the government increased the price by 20%. Excise department has received several complaints.

Excise department plans to raid bars and restaurants that charge extra money from their customers. The raids will be conducted soon.

The excise department officials will approach these bars disguised as consumers. If the accusation is proved, the licences of such bars will be cancelled.

Nagarajappa, additional commissioner of excise department said that the licenses of bars will be cancelled if they are found to be charging more money from their customers.

License fee for both wine shop as well as bar is very expensive. They thrive on profits made by smuggling liquor from across the border. The excel sheet finance managers sitting in the cozy offices of Vidhan Soudha know this, but still make unimaginable projections and tax collection targets and hand them over to their famous PR personnel and useful idiots viz., elected representatives. These representatives also take blame for high price and inflation. For liquor shop and bar owners, it is about ROI from the hefty license fee they pay. They try to achieve this by hook or by crook. The material is a liquid. You need to pay a license fee to sell it, you need to pay tax for its consumption and you need to pay tax on the income generated by its production. It is money, money everywhere around it for the Government. Be wise and make a detailed study on the beer process and alcohol production process. Understand the concept of distillation and boiling point of ethyl alcohol and literally make your own glass of drink at home. Just like grow your own vegetable, generate your own electricity (distributed power generation they say), boil your own portion. Government will have no choice but to provide you free air and charge you for the CO2 that you exhale.

Doc, you should buy your stock from big wine shops like Wines and Spiritz, Ratna's, etc or even MSIL outlets where they charge only MRP; and you can even get a discount if you buy for the whole month 😁!

Now the cycle will change and many tippers will changeover to home made stuff/Desi hooch from cashew or mixed fruit or gur; also, there will be a big surge in smuggling booze from neighboring states through "well organized cartels" as the profits are very very attractive! Such an hefty increase in price of liquor will be counterproductive to the sales for sure!

No one is asking the Excise Dept. why they are levying a 20% hike to the price of liquor breweries. But are concerned about Bar owners or Liquor Shop owners from charging extra. The Bar owners provide you with a peaceful place to meet and drink, and this costs money in rent, utilities, furniture, employees, bribes to our great Police force who are always on the take and as well free drinking and eating! The Liquor shop owners pay high rents and employees wages and as well as Lakhs of Rupees for a Rs.50 Liquor licence. Who do you think takes the Lakhs of Rupees for a Liquor Licence? Best solution is to either distill your own beer or liquor at home. Complaining will not solve your issues. This is a vicious cycle and everybody is on the take. If there was no Liquor Breweries there would be no Excise and if there was no Excise, no Revenue, and if there was no Revenue our Politicians would have no funds to fly with helicopter to Adi Udupi and would have to travel by bus, train and boat like all Indian citizens. Got it! Folks wake up! The easiest way to get easy revenue is Liquor, Cigarettes, and Ghutka. No matter how much you hike the price of liquor, cigarettes or ghutka, it will still sell, legally or illegally. The present government has not spared Restaurants too, if you happen to eat in one. The Tax 5% must be paid by the Restaurant owner because he profits from his business and not you by eating. However, it is conveniently and legally passed on to the consumer! Why no one is complaining to the PM or CM or local MLA?

Thomas don't worry; let the window period after prices have been increased extraordinarily get over, hotel businesses will suffer heavy cuts, because along with alcohol, food also has become too unaffordable, thanks to the uncontrolled inflation! This is my calculation based on my research! The entire ecosystem of those involved in the spirits business will suffer and smuggling from neighbouring states through well organized cartels and country hooch businesses will prosper! BTW, if I am not mistaken, a major portion of liquor business comes from low to middle brand tipplers who will not be able to bear this price onslaught for long! IMHO this is just the beginning of another down cycle, worst is yet to come! Cheers!!

Thomas; in Mumbai (though booze is very much cheaper than Mangalore) most low to middle class tipplers buy booze from wine shops along with a soda bottle/plastic glass; take the stuff in any secluded place (some located besides the bars) and sip it like a cold drink thus totally avoiding bars and saving on money, because any which way bars only provide place to sit and do not give even a spoon of pickle 🤒!! This sort of looting by bar owners will have a highly debilitating snowballing effect on the business!!
