Mangaluru: Conned by hackers, Kadaba youth languishes in Riyadh prison, family urges for his release

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Aug 18: A youth, native of Kadaba, who had gone to Saudi Arabia on employment was trapped by bank account hackers and is languishing presently in a prison in Riyadh. His family members have urged union government for the release of the innocent youth.

Chandrashekhar, a resident of Moojuru under Aithur village of Kadaba, is the victim of this bank account scam. The complete information on his ordeal was given by his family friend Sridhara Gowda and NCEF secretary of Mangaluru Shashidhar Shetty on Thursday to the media.

Chandrashekhar was working in Bengaluru and as promotion was sent to Saudi Arabia for company work in 2022. He was working for Alfanar Ceramics in Saudi Arabia. In November 2022, he visited a shop in Riyadh to purchase a mobile phone and SIM card and gave two thumb impressions on an application. A week later, Chandrashekhar received a message for his new telephone number in Arabic. Chandrashekhar opened the same. After two days, he received a call and information about the SIM card was sought. When asked for OTP, Chandrashekhar provided the same. A week later, Saudi police arrested Chandrashekar.

Without the knowledge of Chandrashekhar, hackers had opened an account in his name in a bank in Saudi Arabia. An amount of 22000 Riyals was credited to the account of Chandrashekhar and was transferred immediately to another account by hackers. The woman, who lost money, raised complaint with the police. The police saw that the account is in the name of Chandrashekhar and arrested him.

Chandrashekhar’s marriage was fixed in January. When the marriage preparations were on, he was arrested in Saudi Arabia. Now he is in prison for eight months. His friend collected Rs 10 lac and gave the same to the lawyer in Saudi Arabia. But Chandrashekhar is still not released. Though the matter was brought to the notice of the external affairs ministry through MP Shobha Karandlaje, no progress is made in the case of Chandrashekhar. Now the family members are trying to put pressure on the union government through other people’s representatives, organizations and civilians.

In fact in Saudi Arabia, no thump impression is sought for buying a sim, nor anyone has to sign any application. What is required is to show resident ID, and give biometrics and that has to match with the biometrics available in govt. database. Secondly opening an account on anyone's name is NEXT TO IMPOSSIBLE in absence of original resident id.

I guess he bought the SIM before he could get resident ID, using PP copy . That's why the thumb impression was taken perhaps. Otherwise as you say, for those who hold a valid ID, no thumb impression is needed to buy a SIM card. But your second point that no bank account be opened without valid ID holds good. Unless a valid Resident ID is issued, an expat worker cannot open bank account in KSA or any other GCC country.

Very sad thing to happen to the young man... Always in a new place do not trust the small shops... Go to a reputed establishment for services... If you are well versed with the locality it is fine... Also never sign anything sent on non familiar language or send OTP... It will be a hard task to take the man out of Saudi prison as even embassy officials are not respected in many places unlike in Dubai...

All the BJP publicity about Vishwa guru and Jaishanker by godi media is for the Indian people only and most of the foreign countries know what is happening in India about control of media who are acting like parrots of BJP . They also know about freedom speech and expression . Manipur rapes and murders were discussed in US Congress,, European Parliament , UK Parliament to express concerns. So don’t rely on BJP to intervene .
