In suicide note, NRI woman who ended life in K'taka accuses Australian authorities of harassing her

Dharwad, Aug 25 (IANS): The NRI woman from Australia, who recently committed suicide in Karnataka's Belagavi district, in her death note had accused the Australian authorities and some residents of a locality in Sydney of harassing her family, police said on Friday.

Priyadarshini Lingaraj Patil (40) from Dharwad had committed suicide on August 20 near Saundatti in Belagavi district. She had ended her life by jumping into the Malaprabha river in Goravanakolla village. Her body was found in Naviluteertha village of the district.

She had arrived in Bengaluru from Australia and from there she had reached Hubballi and then Belagavi by bus.

Priyadarshini’s family was waging a legal battle with the Australian authorities regarding the custody of her children.

Her son Amartya had faced a health problem. During treatment at a local hospital, the child allegedly started showing in some side-effects. When Priyadarshini questioned, the hospital did not respond, following which she had submitted a complaint to the government against the hospital.

Priyadarshini had claimed that the hospital authorities accused her of unable to take care of her children and subsequently, the government had taken custody of her two children. Though Priyadarshini protested against the move, she could not get back the custody of her children.

Priyadarshini had even asked the Australian government to withdraw the citizenship of their children and let her take them to India for treatment but had not got any response from the government.

Her family has alleged that the suffering after her children were taken away and her health problems pushed Priyadarshini to take the extreme step.

In her death note addressed to her father, Priyadarshini stated, "Our lives are threatened. I am compelled to end my life for the survival of my children and husband Lingaraj. I am accepting my death for the good of my family. From 2021 to the present day DCJ (Australia's Department of Communities and Justice) has ruined my family. The residents of Verlie Street in Sydney have harassed us."

She further accused the family of a police officer of troubling her. She had also claimed that the water supplied to her house was poisoned.

Police are investigating the case.

what a sad state of affairs. The NRI woman was not just running away. she was escaping from her husband too. Only one brief line about him; what was his role? Was he incapacitated? And she had taken charge? Bottom line: she must he delusional and her mind was torturing her, urging her to end it..

I feel that she was not capable of raising her Children (Whatever may the issue with her). Australian Government wants (Qualified/skilled enough)immigrants come to their country and work and enjoy their life. I had lived in Australia for more than one and half years. Racism may be there but Indian community there is so much which can come over it. My daughter, son in law with their son staying there and they never feel any insecurity there. Most of the neighbors are from Punjab (Sikh Community) and they are so good than our own relatives. This lady has a problem with the Government, Police officers family and also feel that her house water is poisoned (which is undergrounds supply), then she must have had a problem within herself.

Charles, probably you are right. However we cannot “paint with the same brush" any particular character. Life is that way. Probably (I reiterate .... probably) Priyadarshini Lingaraj Patil was immature to handle this situation and needed counselling. Things would've been different.

Something fishy and can't rely on her statements. As far as I know Australia has strict laws for any offense and not like India. In India you can get away with any crimes if you have money and political influence. Best Examples Jessica Lal murder case, Salman Khan, Ajit Pawar getting cleaned once he supports BJP and many more cases.

RIP 😔!! "She had also claimed that the water supplied to her house was poisoned." From this particular statement of hers, it appears that she was suffering from a serious mental disorder, possibly "schizophrenia"! I don't think that the authorities there are so careless to take charge of her children without following due protocol including subjecting the person to thorough psycho analysis!! The above is a very personal opinion; please do your own research!!

BTW, BEST has introduced world class electric double decker and single decker AC buses with incredibly cheap fares; with a ₹50 ticket you can travel the entire day on any route; where such facility is available??? They have also introduced wheel chair friendly buses on specific routes to cater to the handicapped!!

This is very sad. May God forgive her and May her soul rest in peace Whatever the problem we have in life, suicide is not the solution. We must fight for it. After the death how your loved one live without you? By Sharing your problems with your close friends or relatives might have been helped her to find some kind of solution . My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.

No one can believe her state " She had also claimed that the water supplied to her house was poisoned". are they bringing water for you tanker?. It is the same water for everyone who are living in particular council area. A word for Jossey Saldanha, I lived in enough countries to disagree in your statement. When I was in Bombay, I knew how the people of North treated even a film star like Kamal Hasan or Singer like Yesudas. Everyone who can't speak Hindi is termed Tamilians. We have seen comments from some leaders from North about Keralites just based on colour. When I was in College, we had discrimination based on State (kadapu) or based on religion (cut). We did see how we treated African students as well as our own North east people during Covid. Discrimination is everywhere. Imagine if Australians/Americans comes to India to work and how we might treat them. Unfortunately in Australian law you can't beat the children and that might have been happened here which is treated as child abuse, though as Indian parent you want to smack your child when they do naughty things. unfortunately when we live in other countries you have to follow their rules . If a foreign tourist lie down in beach with bikini, I am sure they will be charged in India or harassed by a group but bikini or even half naked is not a crime in their country.

Sad. May God grant her Peace. Let us accept that every country has laws that they think are necessary to safeguard their children and citizens. Priyadarshini had claimed that the government had taken custody of her two children. Though Priyadarshini protested against the move, she could not get back the custody of her children. Their laws are not custom-made. They apply them equally. It is a warning for Indians not to go to other countries leaving the paradise here.

What a sad end of mother ?Instead of fighting and show that she is in a stabile mind set, come home and suicide.Sad for her children too. They lost one mother.Unless without strong proof ,govt or officials will not take the children in custody. When they find children are in danger ,they will immediately take them off family. One question what is with her husband ?No reaction from him´?where is her husband stays now?Heartfelt sympathy to her family ,children .May her soul rest in peace.

If her children are truly taken by the Australian authorities then its disheartening. Please parents don't make your kids on different Nationality than your. Your kids are under different Nationality then even Indian embassy can't help you. And when you are 1st generation immigrant Never argue with any Govt agency. Australia is a large but wild country.
