Mangaluru: Conductor's death - Special drive held against footboard travel, 123 cases booked

Mangaluru, Aug 31: In a concerted effort to enhance passenger safety, the city police commissioner, Kuldeep Kumar Jain, disclosed that 123 instances of footboard travel on buses were recorded on Thursday, August 31, during a dedicated enforcement operation.

The action follows the death of a 23-year-old private bus conductor after he was flung off the footboard at Nanthoor Circle on August 22.

The commissioner also revealed the outcomes of a recent meeting with bus operators. An agreement was reached to ensure that passengers do not stand on the footboard in the absence of doors. This proactive stance aims to prevent hazardous situations. The bus operators have pledged to raise awareness among commuters about adhering to safety protocols.

Buses equipped with doors will continue to enforce strict compliance, while the older city buses, which lack doors, will adopt a new practice of not commencing their journey until the footboard is clear.

This collaborative initiative between law enforcement and bus operators underscores their joint commitment to upholding passenger safety standards and reducing avoidable risks.

I request the Mangalore Police Commissioner to check the buses plying in rural areas and if guilty, punish them Instantly. Don't authorise the hobali Police officers as they are influenced and bribed the bus Owners.

This police action is only for a day or two like action against shrill horn. Police and public should discipline the private bus staff . In order to stop rash driving by private bus operators , just increase the travel time for all the trips and decrease the time gap between two trips.. For example if it is 30 minutes for Mangalore to Surathkal , revise it to 40 minutes. If the time gap between two buses is 10 minutes , make it 8 minutes.

If RTO checks if the vehicle complies with RTO rules and regulations this type of incident can be stopped. if they do spot-checking guess many vehicles may go to the scrap yard. no proper inspection conducted by RTO only are busy in taking fines from public.?

First and foremost strictly limit the number of passengers on each bus. Let the job of conductor and driver be hassle free and risk free.
