Kunchitiga seer appeals not to prefix ‘Dr’ before his name, says ‘doctorate degrees are on sale'

Hosadurga, Sep 4: Sri Shantaveera Swamiji, seer of renowned Kunchitiga Mahasamstana has appealed to the devotees, media and public not to address him as ‘Dr’ in future.

In a press statement, he said, “The honorary doctorate has become a business these days. For the sake of money, doctorate degrees are given to powerful and affluent people in the society. It is sickening to know that rich people are buying doctorate offering money.

“Doctorate degrees are sold for Rs 10,000-Rs 20,000 like vegetable vendors selling vegetables on footpath. The rich and affluent buy these and show their ego. Even Math seers are in this business. Due to these fake degree holders, genuine and able doctorate degree holders’ respect is depleted. Hence, I have refused the doctorate degree that was given to me. I will also not accept the invitation from two more countries who have said that they wil confer doctorate degree on me,” he said.

Sri Shantaveera Swamiji was conferred with the doctorate degree in 2018 and 2019 recognizing his service to agriculture and social service. Soon, the swamiji was addressed with ‘Dr’ as prefix before his name. However, now the swamiji has asked everyone not to add Dr before his name and clarified the reason behind the decision.

Rahul Dravid, who is renowned as the ‘Wall of Indian cricket’ also refused to accept doctorate degree from a prestigious university of Karnataka. The date of convocation was also decided by the university. But Rahul gracefully rejected the offer and said that he has not done any achievement to get a doctorate degree. His decision was lauded by scores of people.

Very few People are like Swamiji and Rahul Dravid... Many of these Honarary Doctarates are conferred upon the Rich ,Affluent and Politically connected.. They should refrain from Prefixing DR before their names. Or atleast put Honors in brackets....after their name...

Swamiji has spoken the truth about the dime-a-dozen honarary doctorates and the corrupt so-called universities confer to solicit funds.. f the hondorary doctorates are genuinely given, the doctorat holder should show before the three letter word, another 3 letters in brackets before it, namely {Hon.) I might point out that even in medicine the title of "doctor" to the healing profession is now claimed not only by medical degree holders but by dentists, optometrists,l and also by technicians such as electricians and plumbers. Any one who dagnoses a prolem, medical, technical or other, can claim to be a doctor. I had a card from a Plumber which said Doctor of Plumbing. I have also heard of doctor of basketmaking! Strictly speaking, doctorate is the highest degree that is conferred by a University. Medical doctors use the generallt popular appellation; they have only a first degree in medicine; they are graduates in academic parlance. Many universities in India have realized this and have converted MBBS into MD (Doctor of Medicine), and law Universities too in the US hav have converted the first law degree (what others call LL.B) into J.D. (doctor of jurisprudence). To distinguish these fake law doctors from real doctorate holders, US universities call doctorate holders as JSD (doctor of juridical science).

I appreciate the decision of this Seer. Dr. prefix to unfit people is a disgrace to the title. We all know earlier even "Padma" awards were sold for money.

I wholeheartedly commend Sri Shantaveera Swamiji for his decision to refrain from using the "Dr." title. It's disheartening to witness the casual usage of the "Doctor" title, especially by individuals who receive it as an honorary distinction. Furthermore, many people obtain so-called doctorates from universities that lack rigorous oversight to ensure the quality and significance of their Ph.D. work. I personally believe that regulatory mechanisms should be implemented to curtail these practices. This would safeguard the integrity of the "Doctor" prefix, ensuring that individuals who genuinely contribute to knowledge and society, after years of sleepless nights and unwavering dedication, retain its value, undiluted by those who attain it without putting in the genuine scholarly effort that such a title should truly represent. Moreover, the misuse of the doctor title to unjustifiably bolster one's ego is a disconcerting trend. Such misuse not only diminishes the prestige of the title but also undermines the hard work and dedication that true scholars invest in their pursuit of knowledge and expertise. It's essential to preserve the honor and respect associated with the "Doctor" title for those who have earned it through their substantial contributions and unwavering commitment.
