Mangaluru, Sep 10: On the occasion of World Suicide Prevention Day, a walkathon was organized by Suicide Lifeline, a unit of Susheg Charitable Trust, in collaboration with the police commissionerate. The event took place on Sunday, September 10, and aimed to raise awareness about the importance of suicide prevention.
Mangaluru police commissioner Anupam Agarwal flagged off the walkathon, which started from Town Hall and concluded at Loyola Hall–St Aloysius PU College.
District Governor of Lions International Dist 317D, Lion Dr Melwyn D'Souza, addressed the gathering, saying, "This walkathon gives hope to the hopeless. The younger generation is more worried and prone to suicide. Susheg Lifeline and the Police Commissionerate have done a wonderful job with this initiative, which raises awareness among the youth."
Assistant Commissioner of Police, Central Subdivision, S. Mahesh Kumar, emphasized the value of life, stating, "Being a human being is the greatest gift in the world, but it is often taken lightly by the youth. We should celebrate life, but some misuse it by turning to drugs. People are hesitant to acknowledge the negative aspects of life, and parents are often afraid to talk to their own children. We have only one life, and it is incredibly precious."
Mental health professional and trainer, Dr Rameela Shekhar, stressed that suicide is preventable, not inevitable. She highlighted the importance of the helpline number (0824) 2983444 and events like the walkathon in creating awareness.
Laveena Noronha, Director of Susheg Charitable Trust, administered the pledge to students to prevent suicide.
Winners of the reels making and poster making competitions were recognized and awarded.
The formal function was followed by a mime performance by students.
Administrator of Father Muller Charitable Institutions, Fr Ajith B Menezes, coordinator of Susheg Charitable Trust, Usha Rao, and other dignitaries were also present at the event.
Volga Noronha welcomed the gathering, while Brian Fernandes and Jyothi served as event comperes.
