Mangalore, Aug 15: The 65th Indian Independence Day was celebrated at AIMIT, St Aloysius College (Autonomous) Monday August 15 with a flag hoisting ceremony.

The celebrations began Fr Denzil Lobo, director, AIMIT rendering a prayer – Where the Mind is without fear, from Gitanjali, and invoking blessings from God on all the people of India and the political leaders.

Nalini, supporting staff of the Institution hoisted the flag, and all those present saluted, followed by the National Anthem.
 
In his message to the students gathered Fr Denzil said, "India is a country of diversity- diversity of languages, cultures, religions. Though we are diverse, there is unity and that is a great blessing to all of us."

Quoting the historic speech by the first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru on the midnight of August 14, 1947, he said, "Freedom and power bring responsibility….and the service of India means service of the millions who suffer. It means ending poverty and ignorance and disease and inequality of opportunity." He invited the young people to work towards the prosperity of the country. He also remarked that the Tricolour, through the symbols of three colours, green, white and saffron, represents prosperity, knowledge and enlightenment. "It is a call for freedom from poverty through economic development; an invitation to freedom from ignorance through education; and for freedom from fear brought about by enlightenment."

He also said that many a time we may be just focusing only on the black dots when we concentrate on corruption which is rampant and lose the greater picture of development that has been taking place in our country. At the same time, he called upon the students to wake up, in the words of Swami Vivekananda, "Arise, awake and stop not till the goal is reached" - goal to make the country prosperous and united.
