Fusion of Eastern European Art, Euro-Asian Essence at LFW

Mumbai, Aug 20 (IANS): Oneness of the world - that's the idea behind designer Pallavi Goenka's latest collection, Meler, that was showcased at the ongoing Lakme Fashion Week (LFW) and blends Eastern European art with Euro-Asian essence.

The designer, who made her debut at the fashion extravaganza here Thursday, says her collection is a confluence of art and fabric from around the world.

"My collection is called Meler, which means blend in French. The whole concept is to bring together various countries through their fabrics and designs," Goenka told IANS.

"If you go and see countries like Turkey, Greece and Italy, they have a very strong art, culture and history behind them that the whole world has forgotten about. My whole collection is mixing some or the other aspect or element from all these countries and I've put them all together in an umbrella called Meler," she added.

Goenka's collection featured layered shift dresses, cowl drape dresses, multi-panelled jackets, and high-waist cowl pants made in fabrics like georgette, silk voil, textured kota, Egyptian silk, shot silk and silk satin. The colour palette was dominated by bright red, indigo, sunshine orange, ochre, beige and clay red.

She used Japanese and Chinese prints, but said the silhouettes were what stand out.

"The USP of the collection is the different silhouettes and cuts which you don't get to see very often. Today you either talk about western or Indian, but I cannot structure my silhouettes into one thing. It is global fusion," she said.

The designer had a celebrity showstopper in singer Raageshwari, who not only strutted down the ramp in her creation but also crooned a song.

Raageshwari wore an Egyptian-inspired costume that included colourful harem pants with a reddish orange jacket and a head band for her walk down the LFW ramp.
