Eight Injured in Goa Naphta Pipeline Fire

Panaji, Aug 20 (IANS): A Indian Navy sailor along with at least eight people sustained burn injuries after a naphta pipeline passing through the port town of Vasco caught fire late Friday night, officials said Saturday.

Navy officials said that although the pipeline, located 30 km from here, is in proximity of Goa's Dabolim international airport, the incident would not hamper air traffic. Fire department personnel battled against the leakage and the flames.

"About eight people sustained minor burn injuries and the flames have also damaged a house in the area. We have also evacuated some residents living near the fire area. Nearly 10 fire tenders and fire and emergency department personnel are engaged in containing the damage," south Goa district collector Sandeep Jacques told IANS.

The naphta pipeline transfers the gas to a nearby fertilizer producing plant located on the outskirts of Vasco.
