Mangaluru, Oct 11: A remarkable event unfolded in the serene surroundings of 'Lotus Paradise Plaza' as Snehalaya Charitable Trust, Bendur, a beacon of hope, orchestrated a profound program to mark 'The World Mental Health Day 2023.' The event witnessed the participation of 250 enthusiastic students hailing from nine prestigious colleges in both Mangaluru and the Kerala border region. Graced by the presence of three distinguished medical experts, this gathering shed light on the pressing issues surrounding mental health.
The event commenced with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp. Dr Victor C Rasquinha, an accomplished MD and DGO, and a revered professor emeritus at Yenepoya Medical College, took the podium to deliver the inaugural address. With wisdom and compassion, Dr Rasquinha illuminated the complexities of 'Mental Health,' emphasizing its paramount importance to our overall well-being.
Then the stage was graced by the insightful Dr Manu Anand, a senior resident in the department of Yenepoya Hospital at Deralakatte. Dr Anand delivered a compelling PPT presentation, delving into the subject of addiction, with a specific focus on 'Mobile Addiction' and its profound influence on today's youth.
Dr Anand emphasized that the repercussions of mobile addiction, especially among children, teenagers, and young adults, can be deeply concerning, potentially hindering healthy brain development. His presentation illuminated the urgency of addressing this issue to safeguard the mental well-being of the younger generation.
The event continued to evolve with the wisdom shared by Dr Ravichandra Karkal, professor of psychiatry, Yenepoya hospital and college Deralakatte, whose profound insights centered on the intricate subject of 'Mind Matters.' Dr Ravichandra Karkal drew attention to various facets of mental health, stressing that it should never be a justification for depriving individuals of their fundamental human rights or excluding them from decisions concerning their own health. His words resonated deeply, underscoring the imperative of fostering an inclusive and compassionate approach towards mental health. The students actively participated through a stimulating question-and-answer session, with the added incentive of cash prizes for the astute winners.
The entire programme was skilfully orchestrated under the able guidance of Geo D’Silva Agrar, a masterful and exceptionally accomplished master of ceremonies. With a wealth of experience, a gift for eloquence, and a profound reservoir of knowledge at his disposal, Gio Agrar's role in the proceedings was nothing short of remarkable. His contribution added a layer of depth and intrigue to the program, ensuring that 'Mind Matters' became an exploration that left an indelible mark on all those in attendance.
The event's success was further underscored by Olivia Crasta, the dedicated secretary-cum-trustee of Snehalaya, who delivered a heartfelt vote of thanks. Her words of gratitude resonated with the audience, expressing appreciation for the collective effort that went into making the event a resounding success.
Br Joseph, the visionary founder of Snehalaya, took the opportunity to honour the distinguished guests by presenting them with mementos, a gesture that symbolized the organization's deep appreciation for their valuable contributions. Additionally, certificates of participation were awarded to all students, recognizing their commitment to the cause of mental health awareness. The programme was blessed with the presence of Fr Cyril D’Souza (the Chaplain of Snehalaya).
