Udupi: Wrong treatment by doctor deprives young girl of realizing dream of joining Indian Army

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (MS)

Udupi, Oct 16: A young girl, who was dreaming of joining the army and was getting trained for the same, is deprived of her aspirations due to the negligence of a doctor as she has physical disability now. Her daily wage labourer parents are distraught as they do not have money for her surgery.

Chaithra, daughter of Sudhakar Poojary, a resident of Belve in Hebri taluk of the district is the unfortunate girl of this sad occurrence. She is suffering due to the wrong treatment given by the doctor without assessing the severity of the injury she sustained in a road accident.

Chaithra was going along with her younger brother in a scooter on November 15, 2021, when a vehicle hit their two-wheeler and she suffered an injury on her knee. A bone in her knee suffered a fracture, and she also received severe injuries to one of the nerves in her leg. After receiving first aid in a local government hospital, Chaithra went to a prestigious hospital in Kundapur. The doctor over there neglected the damage to the nerve and the bone fracture of Chaithra and just put stitches to the external visible injury and treated her in the hospital for 16 days.

Chaithra said, “Even after three or four months, the pain did not subside. I was finding it difficult to even walk. The skin of the leg started turning black in colour. However, the doctor at the private hospital of Kundapur was insisting that it will be alright and was prescribing painkillers.

“At last, when I went to a renowned hospital near Udupi, the doctor over there said that the inside bone of the knee is fractured. He immediately performed a surgery on the same. However, even after six to seven months the pain did not reduce,” she said.

As Chaithra could not walk even after surgery, as a last attempt, she went to a renowned orthopedician of Mangaluru, who on checking found some metal, along with some pieces of bone inside the knee. In addition, he also said that the nerves are severely damaged. For the same reason, three fingers of Chaithra’s leg had stopped functioning. Now another surgery will cost not less than Rs 2.5 lac.

“If the doctor at Kundapur private hospital would have assessed the severity of my injury properly and given me the suitable treatment, the injury would not have gone to the present state. I would have become alright in a few weeks. However, due to the negligence of the doctor, I have to suffer this permanent disability. This should not happen to anyone.”

Chaithra’s parents are daily wage labourers. They have already spent a lot on surgery, hospital bills and medicines. Now they are distraught as they are unable to garner Rs 2.5 lac required for surgery.

Chaithra had nursed the dream of joining the army right from her childhood. She got training for the same after completion of BA. She joined the free physical training camp organized by Thekkatte friends circle. She was trained by former soldier Ravichandra Shetty. Now all her dreams have shattered because of her knee injury.

Whether the doctor is at fault needs to be decided after proper investigation. Sometimes we jump to conclusions without listening to both sizes. BUT ONE THING IS SURE. THE QUALITY OF MEDICAL IS GOING DOWN AND HEADED TOWARDS DISASTER. This is because of mushrooming of both privately and government medical colleges. There ia inadequate teaching and inadequate exposure to patients. Many times a surgeon is passing out without doing an appendicectomy. Politicians should stop thinking that it is a great achievement to open medical colleges. Now NMC is planning to allow only ona medical college per 10 llakh population.. We all should support this in the interest of both the quality of medical education and safety od patients

It very heartening to note the medical expertise opinion and judgements of the readers who have given their valuable opinions on the merits of this case. I think surely the doctors are at fault to cause this accident also and the poor treatment also . Even from Germany one eminent orthopaedic expert has given an opinion on this case in the readers comments that should be sufficient to proceed with media trial and punishment for the guilty doctors. Thanks to media and public these kind of cases is recieving wide publicity these days which can deter guilty doctors from doing this type of criminal treatments .

This is a very sensitive subject so one has to tread with caution. Important questions are, did the patient visit hospital on time? did the injury get triaged on time? was protocol followed etc. It is easy to blame the doctor as a knee jerk reaction but does one put any thoughts towards how difficult it is to become a postgraduate doctor? Inflation affects everybody who isn't Ambani or Adani. Don't know if dear readers have heard about the case in kasargod where a govt doctor was victimised for politely asking for mere 2000 rs bribe. He was trapped by the vigilance department and was caught red handed even though the patient could have bargained and settled for 1500 rs bribe which is what the dr is known to accept out of compassion and patriotism. My point here is treat every body with respect and don't start blame game without ascertaining facts ,like in the case in kasaragod when innocent doctor was arrested for accepting bribe.

Dr.Kusuma N:kindly dont defend the said doctor. You and I know very well that many times doctors do mistake and they dont accept even in court. If the said doctor in the beginning had taken a xray befor putting stiches he would certainly found fracture and metal pieces.I dont say all do mistakes but even here doctors mistake. Why a poor girl has to fight for a operation. If she files a case in court and wins he has to pay for her compansation and money for her operation.I am sure the said doctor got certificate from internet?Let someone proove this.Sad girl has lost her hope of a good future. But let her not hopes to loose.Even many chances are there in Indian Army other jobs for disabled.

In India in most of the cases of Medical Negligence the patient rarely wins , most of the time they are up against a very powerful lobby and the judicial process is very slow and expensive for people, it is sad that the government regulators have failed the public and not come out with strict guidelines so that patients can get some justice as well as compensation. Lawyers should fight these cases free of charge and take a percentage of the compensation amount.

Very pathetic. My sympathies to her. Good hearted people shall come forward and sue all those hospital and doctors involved in her case. Doctor's license shall be suspended for medical negligence and medical committee shall evaluate her case and compensation shall be given, including her present medical expenses by those guilty in her case.

If u check, I think the doctors are merit students only. The problem is I think we shud always get 2 opinions before surgery. Also it is better to get operated with doctors working in a team like in bangalore corporate setup or medical colleges. This individual clinic setup in mangalore is risky for us. Also people have tendency to go to famous doctors often waiting hours together. I hope they hav the time to give proper attention to patients.

Admission on merits have gone for a toss. Have heard a prestigious medical college charges 25 lakhs for locals and 35 for outsiders. Imagine the kind of doctors the nation will have in future.

Merit students are very few lets say 5 or so. I heard its even more upto 1 crore for a student who is an average student but Cent percent rich in money. Very very hard to find good doctors except few. They spend a lot to obtain a degree. How they can earn da same unless otherwise treating the patients this way ? 2 years back my friend operated upon her knee in a reputed hospital. Spent half a lac rupees. Morning admitted evening discharged. After two months pain is more and now even worse. Operated doctor is in europe now.

I was number 2 in the whole of Gujarat in the merit list. If I had applied for a government medical college seat my graduation and postgraduate would have been free. I applied in the Municipal Medical college where my fees were Rs 146 for a term ( 6 months). Now with the high capitation fees, there is no merit left.. These days in spite of being a doctor I am afraid to go to a doctor!!!
