Anna Rajam Malhotra – India’s first woman IAS officer, an inspiration for UPSC aspirants

New Delhi, Oct 28: An inspiration for scores of Indian females, the first woman IAS officer of India, Anna Rajam Malhotra had achieved phenomenal success through her hard work and dedication.

A native of Ernakulam of Kerala, Anna Rajam George was born in 1927. After completing her primary education in Kozhikode, she pursued her higher education at University of Madras.

After clearing her IAS examination in 1951, Anna joined Madras state under the then chief minister C Rajagopalachari. She entered into marital bliss with R N Malhotra, her batch mate of civil service, who served as the RBI governor from 1985 to 1990.

The Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust or JNPT was established under the leadership of Anna. She was the chairperson of the project. Padma Bhushan award was conferred on Anna Rajam for her illustrious contribution to Indian society.

Anna Rajam was instrumental in making the Asian Games 1982, a success during the tenure of the late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. She also served under seven chief ministers of Tamil N adu. She also served in the personnel section of the union home ministry.

Anna Rajam served as the director of Hotel Leela Venture Ltd after her distinguished career as an IAS. She passed away at the age of 91 in Mumbai.
