Udupi district administration celebrates Kannada Rajyotsava

Kannada Rajyotsava was celebrated by the Udupi district administration at Mahatma Gandhi stadium Ajjarkad here.

Laxmi Hebbalkar, minister for women and child welfare government of Karnataka and in-charge minister of Udupi district hoisted the flag and kick-started the Rajyotsava celebrations.

In her message to the gathering, Laxmi Hebbalkar said, "In Kaviraja Marga, the first Kannada work, Kannada Nadu had its upper reaches from Kaveri to Godavari river. With a history of more than 2000 years, it had the perfect concept of Kannada Nadu. On November 1, 1956, the vast Mysore state emerged with the creation of linguistic provinces.

“With the renaming of Karnataka on November 1, 1973 as a result of the efforts of former chief minister late D Devaraja Arasura, our land has witnessed 50 springs of emotional displacement of Kannadigas.

“Nandalike Lakshminarayan, Gulwadi Venkatarayary, K Shivarama Karantha, Havanje Lakshminarayanappaiah, Hattiangadi Narayanrayaru, Airodi Shivaramaya, Mogeri Gopalakrama Adiga Kadekaru Rajagopalakrishnaraya, S U Paniyadi, Koradkal Srinivasa Rao and Pavanje Acharya, have contributed immensely for the development of Kannada language and other arenas in this part. The contribution of these visionaries to the fields of art, literature, culture and music is unique, including many poets like Gururaj Bhat, Matapadi Rajagopalacharya etc. The contribution of the district in building and preserving the Kannada language is also immense. In those days when the country was torn and divided, Benagal Ramarayar, Kota Shivaram Karanta, Panje Mangesharayar and other elders went to different parts of the Kannada country and sounded the Kannada trumpet all over the state,” she said.

Addressing to the current state government scenario, Hebbalkar said, "Due to natural upheavals, more than 220 taluks of the state have not received regular rains. At the taluk level, task forces will be deployed for irrigation and drought management. Our farmers should emphasize water conservation, rain damage and water re-conservation. If the usual rainfall in the district is 1418 mm, the average rainfall is 3332 mm. We are lacking 25% of rain. Already, Karkala and Hebri taluks have been declared as full drought prone and Brahmavar taluks as moderate drought prone taluks. A proposal has been submitted to the government to provide relief grants. The district administration has been instructed to ensure that there is no drinking water problem in the coming summer, and tenders have been called for removing the silt from the Baje dam. It has been suggested to complete the drinking water project works from Varahi at the earliest. Even the common people should start using water wisely.

“Up to 200 units of free electricity is being provided to each house through Gruha jyothi. So far, 149 crore customers have registered under the scheme and are getting free electricity. There are 3,67,343 electricity household users in the district, out of which 3,06,106 customers have registered for the Gruha Jyothi scheme and a total discount of Rs 3482 crore has been given for the month of August-September. This is borne by the state government itself. Four, Indira Canteens have been started to provide breakfast and lunch to the common people at low rates. In the district, new Indira Canteens will be started in Kaup and Byndoor taluks soon,” she said.

As many as 29 achievers and five organisations were conferred with Udupi district level Kannada Rajyotsava awards for the year 2023.

In the past, when a student used the Tulu language at school, they faced disciplinary actions and were required to stand outside the classroom. This highlights the situation in Karnataka, where Tulu is not officially acknowledged as a state language .Other states have recognised their own state languages as official languages, .Tulu being one of the 5 dravidian languages ,karnataka state is yet to recognose it as a state language.
