Public apathy towards HSRP number adoption - Govt likely to extend Nov 17 deadline

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Nov 2: The deadline for installation of high-security registration plates (HSRP) for vehicles registered before April 2019 will end on November 17.

The state government is likely to extend the deadline for the introduction of HSRP due to public apathy towards number plate implementation.

Out of the 2 crore old vehicles registered in the state, only 1.75 lac (less than 10 per cent) vehicles have been fitted with new number plates. Senior transport department officials said more publicity is likely to encourage people to adopt the number plates.

A senior transport official said, "The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has mandated fitting of HSRP number plates for old vehicles due to reasons including security and to prevent misuse of vehicles. HSRP number plates once installed cannot be removed later. Due to this, number plates cannot be exchanged. About 2 crore vehicles were registered in the state before April 1, 2019. After this, HSRP plates have been installed compulsorily for all the registered vehicles," he said.

Although the November 17 deadline has been given in the state government notification, there has been a lukewarm response from the public. "So, we are planning more campaigns to encourage people," he said.

However, he said the campaign had to be stopped temporarily because some have gone to court against allowing only HSRP manufacturers accredited by Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to install number plates.

The deadline is about a fortnight away and the government may extend the deadline again, he said.

Penalising those who do not comply is OK, but before that the transport department has the obligation to personally inform each vehicle owner. It is another matter that the government departments never do that, because we never question them. Once we start questioning them on their lack of accountability, they will automatically fall in line and thereafter they have every right to penalise vehicle owners.

Sir, HSRP number plates are required as people drive at high speed on highways. Speed cameras are being installed at Nethravathi bridge, Jeppu, Kuntikana which requires these plates to capture number - True or False ?

It is a good move, as fake plates will be more easily detected, but it has to be followed up with vehicle checking.

Something as simple as sending a postcard to all vehicle owners would have worked wonders. After all, we have paid road tax for the vehicles we have purchased and the transport department has the obligation to send us intimation on such things - they cannot escape saying the information has come in newspapers. But expecting such a thing from the lazy bunch sitting the road transport office would be too much.

RTO can't control vehicles and people without wearing helmets how will they control fake no plate? simple waste of time and money instead they can them self provide new no plates to all valid vehicles and then charge. this app is hanging and not working properly when so many use it.

nothing much gained by this thoughtless move anyway. if the plate is broken (given its flimsy build), replacing it will be a merry-go-round exercise.

Something new every few weeks, months, is this to generate commercial activity, manufacturing, employment or a critical need. Same with property, every two three years they come with a new document and compliance. People feel tired running around.
