Beltangady: Picnic tour in ambulance – Driver, passengers fined, vehicle impounded

Daijiworld Media Network – Beltangady (MS)

Beltangady, Nov 12: In a peculiar incident, the traffic police in Beltangady confiscated an ambulance and imposed a fine on individuals who had repurposed the emergency vehicle for a pilgrimage on November 11.

The driver of an ambulance, affiliated with a private hospital in Bengaluru, embarked on a journey to Dharmasthala for a pilgrimage, accompanied by eight friends. However, their trip took an unexpected turn when, upon reaching Ujire, the Beltangady traffic police intervened.

Concerned locals, noticing unusual commotion and noise emanating from the ambulance as it traveled from Charmady to Ujire, promptly alerted Sub-Inspector Arjun of the Beltangady traffic police station. SI Arjun acted swiftly, instructing his team to intercept the vehicle at Ujire.

Upon stopping the ambulance, traffic police discovered the group's unconventional use of the emergency vehicle. The individuals and the ambulance were taken to the police station for further investigation. During interrogation, the driver admitted to the group's pilgrimage to temples in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada.

The police imposed a fine of Rs 4,500 on the driver and issued a warning. Since the ambulance did not utilize its siren or disrupt traffic, no formal case was registered. The incident highlights the importance of respecting the designated use of emergency vehicles and serves as a reminder of the consequences for their misuse.

No wonder .when a poor family wants to carry a dead home no ambulance is available. He has to carry the body on cycle or on shoulder.Police should control ambulances now and then when doubt arise. When found guilty cancel the licence of driver and a warning to owner.

Right action taken by the public and the police , but what happens when GOVT vehicles are used for family picnics and to purchase vegetables and groceries for the home and pick up and drop relatives and friends ??? In this case the ambulance belonged to a private hospital ,

There are lots of ambulances in Mangalore whenn there is traffic jam they put siren,. But there is nobody inside . Even if the ambulance is carrying a dead body also they pit siren. Specially Sr Ganesh Ambulance. The drivers also drive rashly. They re nuisance at Kankanady( Fr. Mullers road) .Thye have occupied the full parking ararea . They do double parking. Lots of complains are been given but the traffic police are not bothered

The police action seems to be appropriate and the penalty very proportional. Well done, Belthangady police. After all the brick-bats your station received in the Sowjanya case a decade ago, you deserve accolades from the society.

Ambulances should follow all traffic rules. If it does not carry a patient it should be thoroughly checked. Many places ambulances were used to carry weapons and illegal items, both in India and abroad.

Yes. I fully agree. Many times it is used for personal purposes, like pickup and drop, mailing letters and parcels, bringing food from nearby canteens and hotels etc. Also there are many cases of fatal accidents involving ambulances ( instead of saving lives which they are supposed to do ).
