Mangaluru, Nov 13: Dakshina Kannada district deputy commissioner (DC) Mullai Muhilan said, “We find two meaning in festival of lights Deepavali. One meaning is giving light to others by burning self and the other is that one lamp can light thousands of lamps. Light is also a symbol of knowledge. All have to unite and celebrate Deepavali.”
The DC was speaking after lighting the lamp at the Deepavali Sambrama – 2023 organized by St Mother Teresa forum at Vamanjoor Mangalajyoti junction on November 12.
Dr Vasant Kumar of Mangaluru pro-progressive lecturers’ forum said, “All need light. Hence, there is no caste or creed when it comes to festival of lights. We have to imbibe good culture in youth, who are going astray and build a healthy society. In the three letter Kannada word Samaja, the meaning of relations should be born in human beings (Sambandagalu Manavanalli Janisabeku) is hidden. This is a social feeling. Culture does not mean only building temples and sculpting idol. It is providing equal education and health to all.”
Fr Sudip Paul, director of Sandesha Foundation of Mangaluru, said, “Indian history has a rich cultural variety. All of us used to live in peace and harmony in earlier days. But now everything has changed. Let Deepavali cross all limits of religion and bring happiness.”
The programme was presided over by Roy Castelino, president of the forum. Latiksha did welcome dance. Sunil Kumar Bazal, chief secretary of the forum did the introductory speech.
