Disney-style theme park, marina and ropeway proposed for Goa

Panaji, Sep 5 (IANS) A Disneyland-style adventure theme park, a marina and a ropeway for tourists are some of the major proposals before the tourism task force here, which is likely to meet ahead of the tourism season beginning next month.

Speaking to IANS Monday, Tourism Minister Nilkanth Halarnkar said all the projects would be operated as private commercial enterprises and the state tourism ministry would only serve as a facilitator.

?The task force comprises legislators, bureaucrats, tourism industry stakeholders and non-government organisations. The task force will approve these projects,? Halarnkar said.

?It will not be as grand as the original Disneyland theme park (in the US) but there are going to be some elements of it,? Halarnkar said of the projects scheduled to be up by next year.

?In none of the projects is the government going to offer any land," he said. "Only those parties who have land and are willing to invest money can pick up these commercial projects. We will only be facilitators.?

He further said that the Goa tourism department was pushing hard for setting up a golf course in north Goa. ?We have already issued an expression of interest; other formalities are being looked into,? Halarnkar said.
