High court directs state govt to extend Shakti scheme to private buses too

Daijiworld Media Network – Bengaluru (MS)

Bengaluru, Jan 6: The high court has directed the Karnataka government to extend the Shakti free travel scheme for women in KSRTC buses to include private buses as well. The government is instructed to review the petitioner's appeal within two months in accordance with the law.

Sharath Kumar Shetty, a private bus operator from Karkala, submitted the appeal to the high court, seeking the extension of the Shakti scheme to private buses.

In his petition, Sharath expressed, 'Since the implementation of the Shakti free travel scheme, private bus operators have been facing hardships. Therefore, the scheme should be applicable to private bus operators. Similar to government buses, women's travel expenses should be reimbursed to private bus operators.' The court is urged to direct the state government and RTO to consider the appeal submitted in this regard in July.

Around 75,000 workers in Karnataka depend on private buses. The state government collects Rs 1620 crore in taxes from private bus operators.

How about extension for rickshaw and taxi also? Even they have been impacted due to Shakthi Scheme. Extension to Private buses is desirable - it will reduce some pressure on KSRTC/BMTC while private buses are far more efficient with their services compared to state owned transport buses. Let us face it that Congress has started an important addiction which will be difficult to remove because it is of high appeal amongst women folks. It is also a good political move and neither JDS nor BJP will be able to afford the loss of political capital needed to remove it.

If amazon or reliance hurts a small shop by their pricing then they also should be compensated .. or. Bsnl telephone etc etc .. Strange. Will go to higher bench etc .. Govt schemes are for public good not to improve profits of a private enterprise Private has to compete superior services. More frequencies .. or offer better bus timings .. better quality of bus etc etc .. ..Sanghi oriented judgement..

Dear Rajan, Mangalore Sanghi inspired judgement? Which world are you living in? We have TN and some South states already providing free TV, mixer, grains and rice even today. They have been buying votes like this since ages. Siddu just exposed the colossal mismanagement of state finances by successive national parties. Since when did Sanghi come being associated with Shakthi scheme and for what? Politically speaking, Shakti scheme is here to stay unless you make it controversial. One way, is to extend it to new realms where it is impossible to hold anyone accountable. Once that happens Shakti scheme will be abolished citing corruption. Until then it will be popular and will drain state resources. Regarding getting rid of it, all (Congress, BJP and any party) are on the same page. It served the purpose of Siddu's return to power, and it is economically unviable for any Government of the day and including that of today's government presided by Siddu. So, there is no Sanghi, because they are all Sanghi on this matter.

It is better to scrap all freebies. It is not equally distributed to real needy people. Govt can use the funds for other developmental purposes.

No government in it's senses will ever approve of such an open ended scheme where there will be no control over billing etc on this notorious pvt bus mafia; this appears to be a ploy on the part of some vested interests to throw spanners in the present scheme implemented by the administration!!

if it is extended to private buses...govt treasury will be empty...the chor private bus operators of dk and udupi who are mostly chaddi infested guys will show all false details...they will simply ask women to board at one point and get down at next point and pay them some cut of the ticket charges....should not be given to dk and udupi..let them ask from the brashta party

How can HC judge direct State Government extend Shakti free bus travel scheme applicable to all government buses also to private buses? What is the accountability with private bus operators? If the judges pass this kind of orders, they may pass orders that government should also help hoteliers to supply free meals because government is running Indira Canteens!!! Will this cycle end?
