Sullia: KSRTC bus conductor forces elderly man to alight for lack of small currency

Daijiworld Media Network – Sullia (MS)

Sullia, Jan 7: A distressing incident unfolded on Saturday, January 6, as a KSRTC bus conductor compelled a 75-year-old man to disembark from the bus midway simply because he lacked the exact change to purchase a ticket.

The incident took place at Noojibalthila.

The victim, Babu Gowda (75), a resident of Shantiguri, had boarded the KSRTC bus on its route from Kallugudde to Uppinangady.

Upon presenting a Rs 200 currency note to the conductor, he was forced to alight at Goliadka for not having the necessary change.

Witnesses reported that despite Babu Gowda's plea to settle the difference at the end of the journey, the conductor remained adamant and compelled the elderly passenger to leave the bus.

The incident has sparked outrage among passengers and the public, condemning the conductor's behavior.

Given the limited availability of buses in rural areas and persistent pleas from villagers for increased services, such incidents only exacerbate the challenges faced by rural residents. The lack of a more responsive approach from the government to address transportation issues compounds the difficulties for people in these regions.

I think it is the KSRTC rule that requires passengers to tender exact change for ticket. Rule doesn't exempt older people. Conductor was right. It is a lesson to others.

If paid passengers are on the bus, conductor would have had some or enough change with him. If there is no collection, where will he get the change from? Earlier they used to get incentives based on collection in each trip. Now because of free bus rides, and delay of reimbursement by Government for the free bus tickets, KSRTC staff are not getting incentives. Now lack of interest and some level of frustration among them. May be during next elections some more freebies, then we will have a system unheard of in former USSR or China or anyother socialist country.

It is KSRTC Governments duty to give enough petty Cash and change to Conductor not the Customer ,Will the restaurant cashier will ask the customer whether you brought enough or exact cash? or his owner make sure that enough cash & change given to cashier ? Conductor need to be dismissed immediately from duty on the ground of bad behavior with customer.

Peter Mangalore ,you think of only chappal seva?Nothing else ?Why didnt the man bring some change money with him as he came ?Am sure he is not travelling first time.Cant expect from Conductor when People present their 200 or Big notes to give and Conductor too is not a exchange division. What he made is not correct could have allowed to travel and later exchange.Even co passengers could also help for his travel.Give exchange money and cash from him later.

public transport is for the public. when women can be given free ride( including a rich woman like you) on KSRTC bus, why cant they be considerate for a old man like him? he has told- he will try by the end of the journey, by asking others. why the conductor has so much arrogance?

Conductor should have allowed him until the end point of his journey and if change of200 available with conductor ,he could issue him ticket or allow him free. What kind of training provided to that conductor. Keeping the change is the duty of conductor, not the passenger. Is there a law approved by government to the passenger to pay exact change of the journey. If no please punish the conductor for his action

This is harsh and rude. The conductor behaviour is unacceptable. Conductor usually write on the back side of the ticket and tell the passanger to collect money when destination arrive. The poor old man faced humiliation.
