Mangaluru: Mescom submits proposal to increase electricity tariff to KERC

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Jan 8: The Mescom has hinted at an impending rise in electricity tariffs for consumers at the outset of the new year. A proposal has been submitted to teh Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) to increase the tariff by 0.59 paise per unit for the fiscal year 2024-25.

Mescom argues that the current unit price is insufficient to sustain its operations. However, the public contends that Mescom should focus on trimming unnecessary expenses rather than imposing tariff hikes.

Currently, Mescom states it incurs Rs 8.91 per unit of electricity, while the tariff is Rs 8.32, creating a deficit of Rs 0.59 necessary for revenue sustainability.

For the fiscal year 2024-25, Mescom anticipates revenue of Rs 4929.98 crore. However, projected expenditures are Rs 5281.93 crore, resulting in a deficit of Rs 351.96 crore. Hence, Mescom seeks a unit price increase of Rs 0.59.

In its proposal, Mescom requests government approval to raise the price per KW for LT-2A domestic electricity, AEH, non-commercial electricity, and motive power establishments up to 50 KW from Rs 110 to Rs 115. For consumption exceeding 50 KW, the proposed rate is Rs 215, up from the current Rs 210. Additionally, Mescom suggests tariff hikes for commercial electricity usage in irrigation pump sets, rubber, coffee, tea, areca nut farming, and other industrial applications.

The Bhagyajyoti and Kuteerajyoti schemes will also see increases. Presently, beneficiaries pay a minimum monthly fee of Rs 100. As per the new proposal, this will rise to Rs 105, and the additional unit price will increase from Rs 8.61 to Rs 8.91.

D Padmavati, MD of Mescom, stated, “Mescom has submitted a proposal to KERC to increase the electricity tariff by Rs 0.59 per unit. We are prioritizing the enhancement of the electricity distribution network to our customers through various schemes.

One of the worst power utility company in the country; if someone keeps tracks of the number of times various serious defects are found in their supply nobody, given another option, would subscribe to their services; just have a look on the power distribution arrangement, the third class equipment, shoddy work etc...they have in the Smart City (forget rural areas), it may not be adhering to the worst standards in the third world 😞; pathetic state of affairs...less spoken the better; God save the gullible subscribers.... atleast from sudden electrocution, which might be lurking around 😷😠🙏

These days cost is subjective. When imposed by central BJP Govt., people dont have a choice even to resent. But, when it is done by non-bjp govt., it becomes a great tool for BJP party to put the ruling party on mat. The greatest loot that was noted was where Adani imported coal, got some sudden escalation from origin export cost, that too in transit and consumer paid at higher costs. No questions raised.

KERC is a statutory body which decides prices after considering all factors. MESCOM may ask for revision as they have to keep themselves viable. KERC can accept or reject. MESCOM has to buy power from the market and then distribute them to consumers after accounting for t&d and commercial losses. They have very little room to manage purchase prices. Hence only thing they can consider is reducing losses and increasing price for consumers.

Lets be pragmatic. Desist from blaming previous Govt each and every time. This is the 3rd increase since the Govt came to power. Moreover the free Ele. scheme is not available to all including myself who have voted for Congress. The biggest problem is all are suffering including the ones who have voted for Congress. The same argument goes for rice distribution as well. So as per you we have to keep quiet and take it in the rear, just because we are anti BJP? .

why you did not exhibit the same view when the petrol price was being raised continuously and this very forum the andh bhakts supporting the saffron party were writing that we dont care even if it goes up to Rs 1000 per liter...so the same argument stands good in my case also...though i dont completely support what is happening...but we live in third world country and these things are bound to happen with corruption all over.

How can MESCOM break even if it does not increase. Its a big hole due to the freebie of 200 units. So obviously they have to recoup it somewhere else. The irony is, Its the 3rd increase in less than a year. The past 2 were without any notice. The 'free electricity' is only favoring some sections and not all. But all have to bear the brunt of the increase.

This is injustice, Congress govt to be blamed. Unplanned decision to provide free electricity for upto 200 units free and now they want to recover the shortfall money from middle class users and traders. Govt will not lose any thing all on public. They are clearly fooling the public.
