Mangaluru, Jan 18: The Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) and officials involved are facing strong public criticism for the ongoing excavation of the concrete road opposite the KSRTC bus stand. This marks the third time in the last six months that the road has been dug up for drainage and pipeline works, drawing ire from the community.

The repeated cutting of the concrete road at the same spot has inconvenienced the public, causing traffic congestion and frustration among residents. Three months ago, a drainage leak prompted a 2.5-month repair project by the MCC, creating disruptions for both pedestrians and motorists. The repair work also led to foul smells, affecting local businesses along the stretch.

Despite the repair efforts, the road was not adequately restored, with patchwork evident at the excavation site. Now, starting from January 15, the same spot is undergoing excavation once again.

Netizens are questioning the planning of engineers and elected representatives, expressing dissatisfaction with the lack of pre-planning and raising concerns about the repeated disruptions to the same area. Elected representatives and opposition figures have remained silent on the matter.

The KSRTC bus stand, a crucial location for public transportation, witnesses heavy traffic, and the ongoing excavation is expected to cause inconvenience for at least another month. The project, extending from the KSRTC to the MESCOM office, raises questions about the durability of the concrete road, which has undergone multiple excavations and patchwork. Concerns are also voiced regarding the quality of the road in the near future.

Activist G K Bhat criticized the lack of response from mayor Sudheer Shetty who is the ward corporator as well, and highlighted the failure of pre-planning by the engineer, and said that such repeated disruptions waste taxpayers' money.

The needs of multiple departments and contractors have to be met. Coordinated work shall benefit only a few. One will enter the scene only after the other departs. Waste of tax payers money and misery of common man will continue as long as the system does not seek accountability.

All our house taxes are utilised lavishly as per their whims and fancies. Can the citizens hold paying tax to the corporation?! We can. However who will bell the cat. If concerted efforts are made the citizens can protest by holding house tax to corporation.

Name is development, smart city, game is loot. One just 1km road, that too concrete one gets excavated, dugged and filled at least 3-4times. It has come to a point, people find all this as normal, despite fully aware that it is their money that is wasted. Lucky that our ancestors were much smarter and responsible, otherwise the highway, road, rail networks built across the country, may have confined to some cities alone.

Locally elected representative's with hand in glove with the contractors are only looting the tax paid by the local citizens. How much effort it takes to plan the construction ?? if there was a proper planning, then there was no need for breaking the roads again and again. Evident, we are having poor planning system at our local municipal corporation, where the old style planning is still been considered. Get the young civil engg's who are ready and can provide better road planning and infrastructure. very sad that we call M'lore as smart city and rather expanding the area within the outskirts, we are still trying to put in more pressure and more traffic within the city and creating a panic. It is another b'lore going to be very soon, where for a single kilometer travel we need to plan a day prior.

I really dont understand why our road repairing authorities are not learning. Busy main roads should deviated with proper directions. Paralel roads should be redirected with clear instructions at the road itself. Which era we r living?

This is Smart City concept? There is expiry date in certain locations & certain spots? Everything should be new after sometime? Good work by Smart City Corporation. At least cut that concrete in square shape like cement blocks size which can used somewhere else or give them to poor people to do some construction work. Why destroy such a good strong concrete?

When the town planning is outsourced from a person who has a diploma in architecture, this is bound to occur. Repeated diggings is a cash cow for contractors and politicians. In major cities across the country, there are ducts laid by the side of the road through which utility lines pass but here every, yes every , cement concrete road has been dug up repeatedly irrespective of the political party in power..

Same situation in Pandeshwar as well. Near Hampankatta signal its just over. No idea what engineers has planned before concretion of the roads. There seems to be lack of planning and also waste of tax-payers money.

Just goes to show how well educated the civil engineers are. Once concrete is set, any kind of dredging into it or cutting it with force creates hairline cracks internally which makes it instable especially due to heavy traffic and loads. These days they don't even patch up road properly. They just dump some mud and add concrete again instead of ensuring the mud is packed tightly before pouring concrete into it.

Well said Mr. Prabhu, end of day construction and destruction are avenues for looting the exchequer , tax payers money gone to tax evaders pockets, the loot and scoot mantra is what the elected representatives and bureaucrats follow. This particular issue has made news as it is affecting the business interests of the nearby shops, hotels, etc. that normal traffic has been disrupted is not of any consequence to the MCC.

The extra cost over and above must recover from the CORPORATOR of that ward. He failed to monitor the work.
