Bantwal, Sep 16:
A police constable of the rural station was assaulted by a man he went to arrest and serve a court warrant over an earlier assault case, in Maripalla, near here, on Thursday September 15.

Constable Laxman of Bantwal rural police station was assaulted by Siraj, a resident of Maripalla, a trader in plantains.

Siraj had secured judicial bail related to an assault case and did not appear before the judge.  The court issued a warrant for his arrest.  Accordingly, policemen Laxman, Madhav, Jagdish, and Jaya Kumar raided the house of Siraj in Maripalla and arrested him.

The policemen had to go after Ashraf, another accused with an outstanding warrant, who was believed to be in a house at Maripalla. The other policemen left Laxman to guard Siraj. That is when Siraj assaulted Laxman by hitting his face with a stone and escaped after biting his hand.  Although the other policemen tried to chase Siraj, he had fled.

Police sources claimed that they had information that Siraj was admitted to a hospital in Thumbe, after the incident. The policemen kept a watch in the hospital till early morning on Thursday.  Siraj once again pushed the policeman Laxman and escaped.

A special team was recently formed under the leadership of sub-inspector Mohammed Rafiq Tahsildar to enforce court warrants on those who had secured judicial bail and not reported before the judge.  Accordingly, over 10 accused have been arrested so far.

Bantwal rural police registered a case based on the complaint from constable Laxman.
