Sullia: Arecanut crop loss – Farmer, actress' father ends his life

Daijiworld Media Network – Sullia (MS)

Sullia, Jan 22: An agriculturist took his own life as the leaf scar disease severely impacted the arecanut crop in his farm, leading to substantial financial losses. This marks the second case of a farmer suicide in the taluk within a month.

Narayana Nayak (55), a resident of Thota Chavadi, Markanja village in Sullia taluk, committed suicide by hanging on Sunday, January 21. He is survived by his wife and two daughters. Narayana Nayak was a well-known Chende and Maddale player in Yakshagana. He is also the father of the popular Kannada teleserial actress and Yakshagana Chende percussion artiste, Divyashri Nayak Sullia.

The agriculturist faced significant losses as the arecanut crop was entirely decimated by the leaf scar disease. Additionally, the rubber yield was below expectations, causing distress in managing his life. It has been reported that he left a death note before taking his own life.

The Sullia police conducted a spot inspection at the residence.

On January 4, Jagadish (56), a resident of Aletty village, also ended his life due to financial losses resulting from the destruction of the arecanut crop caused by the leaf scar disease.

Honest and Sincere people cannot digest the fact that they will be unable to repay the loans which they have borrowed. They do not think of absconding either. They know very well that there will be no relief from banks towards small time borrowers, while the ruling party is busy writing off massive loans of big business houses linked to their party .

May his soul rest in peace. Very very sad to read this news. Can't understand why he or a farmar is committing suicide! Everyday, every week, every month, every year, you can not expect only good things and profitable yields. One should be ready in life to face BAD much more than Good. Expect BAD things in life for 80% and good is only or just 20%. Hope this is applied in everyone’s life and people get strong to face difficulties this kind of losing life’s may reduce substantially.

Dear Farmers, your "PRANA " is not important for your MLA and MP. They are busy in other things. So vote wisely next time.

Agriculture is becoming increasingly difficult in coastal Karnataka due to various factors - Rain, labour cost, deceases, destruction by parasites, rodents and peacocks and finally thieves (thotte customers). Sadly Karnataka is dependent on vegetable supplies from Neighboring states.

This is a disturbing trend . Have witnessed that recently farmers have taken load and developed new areca farms . Either this wretched disease will take a toll on farmers income or a Glut of supply in the coming years will collapse areca prices . Less said about rubber tree farming the better.

At least he should have waited for today. Maybe his thinking would have been different had he seen the Ram Temple inauguration.
