Possible hike in beer prices as state govt considers excise charge increase

Daijiworld Media Network – Bengaluru (EP)

Bengaluru, Jan 23: Reports suggest that the Karnataka state government is considering raising additional excise charges on beer.

The increase of the rates is mentioned in the draft of the notification to amend excise regulations 1968.

Sources indicate that the new regulations are expected to be finalized by the end of this month or the beginning of February.

If the proposed changes are implemented, the price of a bottle of beer in the state may increase by Rs 8-10 per bottle.

Gujarat is a dry state. Karnataka will soon be dry state without declaring itself as dry state because alcohol will be prohibitively expensive. Karnataka is already the most expensive state for alcohol. Is ghar ko ghar ki chirag se hi aag lagi hai. We need a government that can cut costs or promote revenue generation. The current model regardless of the political dispensation is not working. BESCOM price hike proposal was from BJP and duly implemented by Siddu. Alcohol price hike approval obtained from outgoing BJP government and Siddu implemented it and now Siddu says, "ye dil mange more". Price reduction never happened, and it is only hike. Bar owners must be carrying broad smiles. They are spending at Goa prices and earning at Karnataka prices and paying taxes to none. Next step from Siddu - give more bar licenses at crores and crores of rupees.

Dear PRAKASH.A, Mlore, The beer process is out there in the internet. It is a simple process but in India, monopoly over profit from alcohol abuse is with the state. If you are doing it, do it in your kitchen for yourself, by yourself and from you only. Yes, you can give a scientific elaboration for academic purposes on how to do it well or master it just as we share recipes over the internet.

Increased tax rate does not mean increased tax collection. People will consume less and tax revenue will dwindle. There is already an evidence of that in the last 6 months. Increasing tax rates will increase smuggling of liquor from nearby states. Border collections may increase, but it won't come to the treasury. If this is done for window dressing of the budget (to show higher expected revenues) then, it is a different matter.

Already IMFL sales are down due to the unprecedented increase in excise duty ; another steep increase in beer prices will hit the beer bar owners the most as many botamaniacs will turn to hard liquor for kicks; rates in adjacent States are much much cheaper!!

Poor people can only afford to drink the very low end booze brands, not costly beer!! It's the middle class beer guzzlers who will be hit the hardest as for rich guys it doesn't matter whatever the rates; beer bar business too will take a hit😁🙏
