Lucknow, Sep 21: Honour killing once again raised its ugly head and took the lives of a couple in Auraiyya district, around 175 kms from Lucknow on Wednesday. Family members tried to cover up the case and cremated them in a haste. By the time police reached the spot, the bodies were mere ashes.
The western region of UP is infamous for honour killings where parents do not hesitate to murder their sons and daughters if they insist on love marriage. Love marriage is a big taboo with the society practicing a 'Gotra' system where couples are not allowed to marry within the same gotra. Several panchayats have been held in this regard and several love affairs have met tragic end due to 'honour
killings'.
In this case, on reaching the spot, police sealed some ashes and registered a case against the family members. However, family members maintained that the couple had consumed poison after their relationship failed to materialise into marriage.
As per reports, 20-year-old Rahul, a native of Dibiyapur locality of Auraiya was in love with his neighbour, 19-year-old girl Moli.
Police got the information from some neighbour that both Rahul and Moli have been poisened and their family members were hurriedly cremating them outside the village. Police rushed to the scene but the pyre of both bodies was ablaze with nothing left. The family members however denied killing the couple but claimed that as they were opposed to their marriage, they committed suicide by consuming
poison. They also stated that they had hurriedly cremated them as it would bring bad name to their family.
A case was registered in this regard and further investigations are on.
