Udupi, Feb 21: Malpe sea walkway point, the first sea walkway point of Karnataka, built at a cost of Rs 53.5 lac faces challenges as it fails in its infrastructure facilities.
The lights are not working, resulting in the fear among the tourists walking in the evening and late nights. The poles have gone rusted and some poles have fallen. The surveillance cameras have stopped working and the rocks on both the sides have lost its rigidity.
As many as 30 decorative lamp lights were installed initially but at present none is working. The interlocks are broken which tourists find difficult to walk.Inaugurated in 2018, the total length of the sea walkway is 480 meters with 9 meter width. There is no regular maintenance and you can see the plastics, bottles and other waste garbages strewn all over.
Naushad, a taxi driver from Malpe said, “In the initial days Malpe sea walkway was good and the maintenance was regular but today there is no maintenance. I request the officers in charge to take action and take up regular maintenance works.”
Fishing gear like ropes and fishing nets are found on the side of the road. The surveillance cameras are found hanging and the sitting stones are broken.
The decline of the Malpe sea walkway underscores the pressing need for a comprehensive maintenance effort to restore its appeal and ensure visitor safety. Authorities are being urged to address these issues promptly to salvage the reputation of this once-promising tourist destination.
