Mumbai Sweat to Beat Trinidad in a Thriller

Bangalore, Sep 27 (IANS) In a thriller that went down to wires, spirited Mumbai Indians (MI) late Monday laboured hard to beat a defiant Trinidad & Tobago (T&T) by one wicket in the ICC Champions League at the Chinnaswamy stadium here.

With fortunes fluctuating till the last ball, Mumbai Indians survived an initial collapse and jitters in the last over to make 99 for the loss of nine wickets against 98 by Trinidad & Tobago in 16.2 overs earlier on a breezy autumn night under floodlights.

Chasing a paltry target (98), an overconfident Mumbai suddenly collapsed in four overs losing four batters for just 33, as Trinidad's most successful bowler and Man of the Match Ravi Ramphal packed off James Franklin and Andrew Symonds for duck after openers T. Suman and Aiden Blizzard returned to pavilion.

Though Ambati Rayudu defied the spirited bowling and smart fielding of Trinidad to keep Mumbai hopes alive till the last over, three brilliant run outs of MI skipper Harbhajan Singh in 18th over and Lasith Malinga and Rayudu in the 20th over saw the exciting game sway towards T&T.

Even as Mumbai stared at a virtual defeat, its tailender Yuzvendra Chahal scrambled for two runs of the last ball to snatch a sensational victory when Trinidad keeper Denesh Ramdin failed hit the wicket from close quarters.

This is the second dramatic victory Mumbai posted in the tournament after beating Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Chennai last week.

Rayudu was the highest scorer for Mumbai with 36, including three fours, maximum in the game. Harbhajan (9) and Malinga (15) managed to hit over the fence one time each.

Earlier, electing to bat after its skipper Daran Ganga won the toss, Trinidad failed to last the stipulated 20 overs and were bundled out for 98, as Harbhajan and Malinga did not allow them to build partnerships with a brilliant spell between them.
