Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Mar 7: Fr Mark Valder, a distinguished Roman Catholic priest, accomplished writer and former managing editor of Raknno magazine, breathed his last at the age of 87 due to a massive heart attack on the evening of Thursday, March 7 at 6:30 PM. His final days were spent at St Zuze Vaz Home on Kankanady-Jeppu Road.

Recently, he was hospitalized at Father Muller Hospital, Kankanady where he breathed his last.

The Mangalore community mourns the loss of Fr Mark Valder, a revered figure known for his significant contributions to Konkani literature and his dedicated service to the church.

Born on October 22, 1936, in Ekkar Village near Bajpe, Fr Mark Valder was the son of Banjamin Louis Valder and Carmine Vas. He was the fourth child among 13 siblings, comprising seven brothers and six sisters. Fr Mark Valder pursued his education with dedication, earning a B.A., M.A., and a Diploma in Journalism.

Background and early education:

Coming from an agricultural background, Fr Mark Valder witnessed the oppression faced by tenants from landlords during his childhood. His early education was in St Francis School, Permude, and due to financial constraints, he had to discontinue his studies temporarily. However, the introduction of the 6th standard at St. Joseph's School, Bajpe, offered him the opportunity to resume his education. Completing his SSLC in 1957, Fr Mark Valder's high school education was sponsored by relatives, including Leo Lobo. He joined St. Joseph's Seminary, Bajpe, for his priestly education.

Writing journey

Fr Mark Valder embarked on his writing journey during his seminary studies, translating moral stories from English to Kannada. Managing Prakashalaya during theology studies, he published booklets on faith and Bible education. Notably, he authored a 312-page book in Kannada titled "Bhagavan Yesu Krista," providing a comprehensive account of the life of Jesus. His ordination on February 2, 1966, marked a significant milestone in his spiritual journey.

Raknno Editor and contributions

Appointed as the Managing Editor of Raknno in 1973, Fr Mark Valder played a crucial role in the editorial landscape. Under his leadership, Raknno published literature by renowned Konkani literary figures, fostering the growth of Konkani literature. He actively encouraged medical articles, leading to the compilation of books like "Bori Bholaiki" and "Aichea Kalar Suvarta Prasar." Fr Mark Valder initiated Raknno Family, a platform aimed at strengthening the magazine's financial status. His commitment extended to conducting workshops to train budding Konkani writers.

Konkani Movement and recognitions

In 1974, Fr Mark Valder collaborated with other Konkani leaders to form Konkani Bhasha Mandal Karnataka. He played a pivotal role in galvanizing support for the Konkani Movement, working with leaders like C F D'Costa, B. V. Baliga, and others. His tireless efforts earned him awards and recognitions, including a journalism award from Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Akademy.

Parish Pastoral work and later life

Following his tenure as the Editor of Raknno for thirteen years (1973 - 1985), Fr Mark Valder served various parishes, including Ammembal, Moodbidri, Tannirbhavi, Siddakatte, and Gantalkatte. In his later years, he contributed to Mount Rosary Charitable Institutions in Alangar, Moodbidri.

Fr Mark Valder's demise marks the end of an era, leaving behind a rich legacy of literary contributions and dedicated service to the Konkani community. His unwavering commitment to social justice, encouragement of budding writers, and pivotal role in the Konkani literary movement will be remembered and cherished.

Last rites

The mortal remains of Fr Mark Valder will be kept for public viewing at 8 am and the funeral mass will be held at 9 am on Saturday, March 9, at St Vincent Ferrer Church, Valencia.

Thank you lord for giving Fr Mark Valder to our community. A simple person lived life as he preached, very popular among the masses wherever he served as parish priest. He generously used God given talents for the upliftment of the society. As managing editor of Raknno weekly not only he nurtured young amateur writers and artists but also used Raknno weekly’s reach to get land ownership rights for the oppressed poor peasants during land reform act in 70s. Those beneficiaries were not just Christian community but also all other oppressed peasants of all communities living in poverty for generations in Zamindari system. Your contribution to Konkani language, Konkani culture and literature will be remembered for generations to come Fr Mark. As your name says you have put an indelible “mark” on the society which will not be erased for generations. You will remain in our hearts and thoughts forever father. A grand salute to you for your contributions to the society and Konkani community at large and teaching us how to live life helping others in whatever capacity we are in today and everyday. Eternal rest grant unto him, O lord and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul rest in heavenly peace Amen.

Rest in Eternal Peace to his soul. Fr. Mark Valder played a significant a influence in my pre-teen and teenage years, while he was the Asst. priest at Barkur. He used to take me for his evening walks sometimes; he will engage in Religious discussion with a Brahin guy. With his bold contribution in Konkani Language, he was pioneer and ahead of his times. It is nice to go through 'Hello Father' interview with Walter Nadalike, with Fr. Valder's candid biography talk.

Rev Fr Mark Valder was in Bendur Parish during my school days in the late 1970s and early 1980s. He was our favourite presider for the Sunday Children's Masses. He explained the scriptures in a way that made sense to us. He was short in stature but had a very big heart. As he returns to the Maker, I pray that God may welcome Rev Fr Valder into his presence and grant him eternal joy.

Two days back i went to see him. He was there in hospital but jovial, talkative as usual. For twenty minutes we talked mostly about old days. In 1976 he published my poems for the first time in Raknno, that too 8 poems in one full page. I used to do artworks for Raknno. We talked about that and many other things and people we knew. Before leaving he reminded me to collect his book from his residence. I said I will.... I have lost a good friend, a true priest... may his noble soul rest in eternal peace.
