Beltangady: KSRTC bus narrowly averts disaster, driver's quick thinking saves passengers

Daijiworld Media Network – Beltangady (MS)

Beltangady, Mar 9: The presence of mind of the driver of the KSRTC bus prevented the vehicle from plunging into a deep gorge on Charmady ghat after the brakes failed.

A KSRTC bus was descending Charmady ghat on Friday, March 8, when the brakes suddenly failed. As the bus lost control, driver Santhosh intentionally crashed it against the roadside drain wall, bringing it to a halt.

A significant amount of smoke billowed from the bus upon impact with the culvert of the drain. The bus was traveling from Kadur to Mangaluru. The timely and bold actions of driver Santhosh were praised by both passengers and the public.

Alternative arrangements were made for the passengers to continue their journey to Mangaluru via KSRTC.

Riding down the ghat in higher gears on brakes will cause brake fade and braking efficiency will stop. Also the air pressure will come down due to constant braking. Heavy vehicles must descend in lower gears. Brake fail is the most misquoted reason.
