Mangaluru, Mar 9: Youth Red Cross and National Service Scheme in association with Father Muller Charitable Institution held a blood donation camp along with a vintage exhibition on Saturday March 9 at Milagres College campus.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Kelvin Peter Pais, liaison officer at Father Muller Medical College, Mangaluru, stressed the value of blood donation and its importance. He said, "If you ask anyone about the difference between blood and water, they will often say something like 'blood is thicker than water’. Just as our bodies require water, they also require blood. Blood plays a crucial role in transferring oxygen to other vital organs of our body. Father Muller's institution has been a beacon of healthcare in Mangaluru. Now that Father Muller has its own Thalassemia center, we require lots of blood in order to treat these patients."

Dr Kirana Pailoor, head of the department of immunohematology and blood transfusion at Father Muller Medical College, Mangaluru, shared insights with students about the importance and criteria for blood donation. She stated, "I am pleased that this initiative was taken by Milagres College. When we say blood, it's not just blood; it's all those things which are procured from blood such as plasma. Although some of the students here might have already donated blood in their life, it's precautionary that anybody above the age of 18-60, above the weight of 50 kg, with haemoglobin level of 5.5 is required along with blood pressure count. If anybody takes antibiotics, then you'll be not allowed to donate, but you can donate after 15-20 days. Blood is essential for many patients, and many patients lose their life because of blood loss. Donating blood will also help patients who have blood-related issues, some individuals who have malaria require platelets procured from blood, and patients with leukaemia also require lots of blood. Hence it is essential to remember how our blood can save others' lives."

Fr Michael L Santhumayor, principal of Milagres College, Mangaluru, emphasized the importance of blood donation by stating, "Blood and water cannot be stored, and similarly, the blood in your body can help save someone else's life. This is the mission of helping others through the initiative of providing assistance to patients in need."

He also expressed his delight regarding the Vintage Exhibition, which is being held for the first time and said, "Milagres College students and teachers have organized traditional and antique exhibitions. It features over 1000 artefacts, which have been contributed from homes. We initiated this event to educate students about our rich culture and traditions. I encourage everyone to come and visit this exhibition, which will be held from March 9 to 11."

The welcome speech was delivered by Shravya N, NSS programme officer and vote of thanks was delivered by Sahida Anjum, YRC programme officer.
