Mangaluru, Mar 9: A man crossing the road was fatally struck by a speeding car at Mudipu Junction on Friday afternoon.

The victim has been identified as Siddique (48), a resident of Karopadi in Bantwal. Siddique, who had recently returned from working in the Gulf, had been back in his hometown for just two months. He was residing in an apartment at Deralakatte. Siddique had offered Namaz on Friday afternoon and was on his way home. Upon disembarking from the bus at Mudipu Junction, he stopped at a nearby ATM to withdraw money. Tragically, while crossing the road to catch another bus, he was struck by a car traveling towards Mangaluru.

The car involved in the accident was driven by Soorajnath. Siddique sustained severe head injuries from the impact and tragically passed away while being transported to a private hospital. Siddique, who was scheduled to return to a Gulf nation next week after his vacation, is survived by his parents, wife, and three children. A case has been registered at the south traffic police station in connection with the incident.

Kartik (12) tragically lost his life on December 27, 2022, at the same location. This incident took place near Mudipu Junior College while a pedestrian was crossing the road. The footpath in the area has been encroached upon by shop owners, leaving pedestrians with no choice but to walk in the middle of the road. Concerned members of the public have appealed to the administration to address the inconvenience faced by pedestrians along this stretch of the road.

As usual most will blame cars, yet no one will point out that it was the fault of the pedestrian.

Our bike riders, car drivers think that they are driving on maidans and not on narrow roads. Driving has become a child play now. Thats why pedestrians become the victims and losing their lives

Where will poor people walk if there are no clear footpaths especially where vehicles are able to accelerate because of less density of traffic and straight roads, unlike the main city limits where traffic snarls do not allow anyone to push the gas pedal even for a few minutes? 😞😞🙏🙏

RIP! Another innocent blood sacrificed. Almost entire MangaNaUru footpaths have been encroached upon by various business establishments (forget the small vendors, foodcarts etc); many places large commercial buildings, built by so called highly reputed builders, have very cunningly built their legal spaces facing the roads at a gradual slope to merge with the footpaths to allow illegitimate parking of their vehicles, thus making it impossible for anyone to make out where the footpath is.... this is not possible without the connivance of rogue, corrupt elements in the administration, adding to the menace are the abnormally high median dividers which are very risky to climb over and go to the other side for a person with average height...many places medians are curvy with overgrown plants impeding the visibility of oncoming vehicles...andwith vehicles buzzing past at high speeds, chances of getting hit (if hit chances of survival are very bleak)...all in all, even walking on the side of the roads is a high risk activity on these God forsaken highways.... very pathetic state of affairs... only some Divine providence or a guardian angel can protect the travellers until they get back home..... .

@Rudolf Rodrigues, Mumbai -Mangalore Fully endorse your comments, very aptly summarised. Wanted to add another point, apart from the high media with wild growth, the advertising hoardings placed very 10 meters on the medians are a nuisance and block the view of drivers, specially at intersections. Bottom line there is no scientific method in this madness of haphazard road construction. Corruption is the root cause.

Nothing new of footpath being encroached by vendors, shops keeping their merchandise, vehicles parked and henceforth forcing pedestrians to use the road by risking their lives. The traffic police should be stern with illegal occupants of footpath.

Encroachments by shops and vehicles on footpath (paved or not) should not be allowed, so that pedestrians can walk safely.
