Election commissioner Arun Goel steps down weeks before Lok Sabha polls

New Delhi, Mar 9 (IANS): Weeks before the Lok Sabha elections, election commissioner Arun Goel, resigned from his post on Saturday.

According to the officials in the know of things, Goel's resignation has been accepted by President Droupadi Murmu.

"In pursuance of Clause (1) of Section 11 of The Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners (Appointment, Conditions of Service and Term of Office) Act, 2023, the President is pleased to accept the resignation tendered by Shri Arun Goel, Election Commissioner, with effect from March 9, 2024," read a gazette notification issued on Saturday.

According to sources, Goel could have become the next chief election commissioner, as the incumbent CEC Rajiv Kumar is set to retire in February 2025.

    The EC who has resigned was a core Sanghi .. So one has to dread what is in store as if Mr Goel was not good enough for Rss / bjp ..then who is. Who conducted mayoral elections Chandigarh? NOw New EC ... has to ensure electoral bonds issues .. EVM etc..very many issues of concern ... Hope the government ensures free and fair elections ..the core and essence of our country’s democracy.. constitution .. Despite all problems incl poverty ..Multiples states ..languages ...diversity etc .... our democracy was a beacon of hope for the world ..

    May be feeling the heat of Loksabha elections and pressures of incumbent government on them and new government might take actions on them for favouring the present government if unable to mànipulate EVMs as opposition parties are more vigilant now. With EVM case in Supreme Court it's pressure cooker situation right now.
