Kundapura, Mar 17: “If awareness is not created about the environment, a huge catastrophy will happen in the near future,” said environmentalist and social worker Vinayachandra Sastana.
Vinayachandra was speaking at the 200th Sunday cleaning programme that was held from Kodi grama panchayat to Kota grama panchayat under the aegis of various organizations on Sunday, March 17.
He further said, “Usage of more plastic is seen in every household. Due to these diseases like cancer are affecting mankind. Heat is also rising. The number of trees is getting depleted. So, everyone has to make effort to save the environment."
The programme was inaugurated by social worker Anand C Kunder. Ajit Achar, president of Panchavarna Yuvaka Mandala presided. Philips Vaz of Swaccha Brigade Karkala was felicitated.
Kota block Congress president Shankar Kunder, Geeta Kharvi, Satish Kunder, Jyoti Bharat, Jagadish Navada, Mohan, Dinesh Ganiga and others were present.
PDO of Kodi grama panchayat Ravindra Rao welcomed. Sujata Bayari of Panchavarna Mahila Mandala did the introduction, compered and rendered vote of thanks. Executive president Ravindra Kota coordinated the event.
For the first time, a five-km long beach road was cleared of debris and plastic. Cool drinks were provided throughout the stretch of cleaning by locals and Kodi panchayat member Krishna Poojary, Geleyara Balaga Karkada, Kotathattu Shivamurthy Upadhya.
Kodi grama panchayat also provided refreshments. Geetananda Foundation provided garbage bags and transport facility.
