A passer-by raised an alarm. The mini lorry driver stopped his vehicle near the residence of the local farmer Purandara Naika who sprayed water on it through a tube well pipe.

Meanwhile, members of Battemar SSFKMJSYS organisation and locals brought water from their houses and tried to douse the fire. A local Anganwadi worker also joined in the efforts. Meanwhile, a local ward member Abdul Kareem Gerukatte who received the information summoned the local fire brigade. The fire brigade arrived and doused the fire.

Vinay Prasad who was working nearby shoved away the grass from the mini lorry that had caught fire with his excavator. Panchayat staff Ravi and Suresh Gowda also helped him.

Carrying completely dessicated hay in open trucks with the hay projecting out from all open sides not only carries the risk of spontaneous conflagration due to some friction, but also poses grave risk for other vehicles; it's very ironical that cattle owners in the plains have to see such days that they to import fodder from the hilly areas by paying premium rates!!

Exactly around one year ago a similar type of vehicle carrying similar load had caught fire around Melkar area! This extra dried up hay carried in open trucks with hay projecting from all open sides not only poses risk for other vehicles moving behind or in the opposite direction, but also carries the risk of spontaneous conflagration on the slightest friction with some hard object, spark then gets aggravated by the hot wind blowing in the opposite direction; BTW; nobody would have thought, a few years ago, that a day would come wherein cattle owners would have to import cattle fodder from the hills to the plains by paying a high prices??
